The 20th European Women’s Individual Championship was a 130-player 11-round Swiss held from 11-22 April 2019 in Antalya, Turkey, in the Aska Lara Resort & Spa Hotel. Rest day: 17 April (after Round 6). It was organized by the Turkish Chess Federation, under the auspices of the European Chess Union. Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 more minutes for the whole game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. Prize fund: 60,000 euros, with the top three players receiving 10,000, 8,000 and 6,000 euros, respectively. Tournament director: Ozgur Solakoglu. Chief arbiter: Geert Bailleul. Play began each day at 3 pm (Round 11 at 11 am). Number of games played: 708. Alina Kashlinskaya topped the five-way tie for first place. Sebag took silver, and Paehtz bronze. She is the fourth Russian to become European women's champion, her compatriots who previously won are: Alexandra Kosteniuk (2004), Tatiana Kosintseva (2007 and 2009) and Valentina Gunina (2012, 2014, 2018). Curiously, Artemiev and Kashlinskaya, who both became European individual champions this year, were also Russian junior champions in the same year, in 2013 precisely. |

Top seed Aleksandra Goryachkina had a quite underwhelming tournament, she did well in the open European Individual Championship. Now she has to focus on the Women's Candidates in Kazan, Russia. |

| May-03-19 | | Sokrates: Looking at the list of participants and nationalities, it is very striking that "European" primarily means eastern Europe (east of the old iron curtain). Among the first 50 I counted 10 from western Europe: 3 from France, 2 from Spain, 1 from each of the countries Germany, Sweden, England, Italy and Scotland. It's trivial knowledge that chess historically has been much more present in the east than in the west, yet I am a bit surprised that things haven't changed. Good old Pia Cramling still represents whole Scandinavia - with a great result I might add. Nevertheless. |

 | | HeMateMe: Chess is a low cost hobby for youth? The west perhaps has more diversions for youth, more Play Station video games, 500 channel TV on the wide screen, more computer notebooks... The eastern European kids are probably better at science in the classroom, too. The USA continues to import academic PhDs from eastern Europe and SE Asia because our own kids have lost interest in math, chemistry and physics. |

In Denmark many young men play online games like Counterstrike, but I direct my wrath :-) towards the so-called social media (Instagram, Facebook etc.) for stealing everyone's time and attention. It has become a social disease, a kind of unhealthy addiction IMHO. |
