Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
European Championship (Women) (2004)

The 5th European Women's Championship was a 108-player 12-round Swiss tournament held at the Treff Hotel in Dresden, Germany, 21 March to 3 April 2004, with a rest day on 29 March (after Round 8) and a day for playoffs on 3 April. It was organized by the Europameisterschaft Schach der Frauen in Dresden 2004 e.V. society and the Dresdner SC under the auspices of the European Chess Union. The first 12 players would qualify for the World Championship tournament in 2006. Time control: 90 minutes for the whole game, with 30 seconds added per move from move one. If players were tied for medals or qualifying places, the ties would be broken by a knockout system, each match consisting of two Rapid games (15 min + 10 sec) and if necessary two Blitz games (5 min + 2 sec) and an Armageddon game. Tournament director: Dirk Jordan. Chief arbiter: Klaus Deventer. Play began each day at 1 pm. Number of games played: 647 Classical + 14 Rapid = 661.

Alexandra Kosteniuk beat Zhaoqin Peng in the tiebreak match for 1st place. Stefanova beat Dzagnidze and Zhukova in the tiebreak matches for 3rd place. The six players with 8.5 or more points, the four 8/12-players with highest Buchholz score, and (after tiebreak matches between the four 8/12-players with lowest Buchholz score) Tatiana Kosintseva and Jovanka Houska qualified for participation in the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2006). Tiebreak games: 5th EU-ChW playoff (2004).
