European Championship (Women) (2003) |
The 4th European Women's Championship was a 113-player 11-round Swiss tournament held at the Marin Princess Hotel in Silivri, Istanbul Province, Turkey, 2-14 June 2003, with a rest day on 9 June and a day for playoffs on 14 June. It was organized by the Turkish Chess Federation under the aegis of the European Chess Union (ECU). The first 29 or so players would qualify for the World Championship tournament next year. Time control: 90 minutes for the whole game, with 30 seconds added per move from move one. If players were tied for medals or qualifying places, ties would be broken by a knockout system, each match consisting of two Rapid games (15 min + 10 sec) and (if necessary) two Blitz games (5 min + 2 sec) and an Armageddon game. Prize fund: $44,000 (minus FIDE and ECU taxes). Tournament director: Selcuk Büyükvural. Chief arbiter: Werner Stubenvoll. Number of games played: 615 Classical + 16 Rapid + 4 Blitz = 635. Pia Cramling from Sweden beat Cmilyte in the playoff match for 1st place, and Kosintseva beat Sebag and Socko in the matches for 3rd place. There were playoff matches for World Championship qualification between nine of the 13 players with 6.5/11 (from which Pogonina, Petrenko, Tkeshelashvili and Dworakowska qualified). The first 30 or so players after the playoffs qualified for the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2004). Tiebreak games for medals: 4th EU-ChW playoff (2003). Sources
