Atterdag: Gukesh lost 7 of 9 on the first blitz day. Hopefully he recovers and plays better tomorrow. Carlsen scored 7½ of 9. He's still got it!

MissScarlett: The first shall be last.
Jul-05-25  Toxic Narcissist: I wonder if Gukesh let his win in Rapid go to his head.
Jul-06-25  Chessinfinite: <Toxic Narcissist>..I think you may be right..blitz chess was never Gukesh's strong point, but this is something else...he must have lost total focus after a great rapid win..

atleast he got a draw with Giri..so there is some hope for him in blitz chess..

Jul-06-25  Atking: Last year ago, it has been said that Gukesh was weak on rapid "Selection of the move too much base on calculation, not enought on intuition..." This year he won clearly the rapid section. Let's him one more year to perfect the blitz section. The World Champion is indeed only 19 years old and one his quality is to learn quickly.

Atterdag: Strange to see no. 1 in rapids become no. 10 and last in the blitz. One would assume the same skills would be mustered.

MissScarlett: Someone on YT christened the world champion, <Flukesh>.

Dionysius1: Huh. Someone on YT should have a bit more respect. Gukesh won the championship fair and square and, given the pressures every WCC has found (is this all there is? etc), and his extreme youth, he's riding the storm remarkably well.

I like he beat up the top players at Zagreb. That'll hold them off thinking he'll be a soft touch if the defence of his crown comes to rapid playoffs.

From a huh to a hah!

perfidious: Who cares what some random on YouTube thinks?

Those rare times I watch chess other than CG, I block the chat because it is so insipid. Even poker sites, which generally feature a higher standard of commentary, are sometimes de trop, filled as they are with 'online pros' who believe they know better than world-class players.

Jul-07-25  macer75: <MissScarlett: Someone on YT christened the world champion, <Flukesh>.>

Ha! Accurate or not, that's pretty funny.

PawnSac: < Toxic Narcissist: I wonder if Gukesh let his win in Rapid go to his head. >

Not likely. His strength is deep analysis. That's doable in rapid with increment. In blitz we typically stay closer to familiar openings and patterns that are comfortable, supported by broad based home prep. Few would deny Carlson has the most finely tuned instinct and positional judgment. As Hikaru has stated several times.. Carlsen is able to find the best moves OTB with amazing consistency.

Gukesh and Caruana share similar ability when it comes to analysis. In the 2014 Sinquefield Cup he dominated the field, finishing +3 to +5.5 ahead of the field (phenomenal performance) yet he was criticized with comments to the effect "Caruana sucks at blitz". The question is why?

He often got in time trouble, because he analyzed too much, not relying as much on good instinct. Carlsen and Nakamura often blitz out the first 15-20 moves in under 1 minute playing very familiar positions, reserving more time for analysis in the later phase of the game.

Caruana started with a prorated blitz rating of 2718 (Aug 2012) and dropped to 2665 until June 2016

https://ratings.fide.com/profile/20...

As he played more blitz and online stuff, he clearly improved, although his results were somewhat erratic, this began to normalize after his peak in 2022.

Gukesh's blitz rating has been a little more steady, but is still currently at 2615. As with Caruana, I expect to see him improve as he dials in his approach to the faster time controls.
