Aeroflot Open (2003)

The 2nd Aeroflot Open was a 201-player Swiss held in Hotel Rossija (Russia), Moscow, 11-19 February 2003. The A group, for players rated above 2400, saw 143 GMs with Alexander Grischuk as top-seed fighting for the EUR 25,000 first prize and a place in the Dortmund tournament in July. Total prize fund (including groups B and C): EUR 150,000. Time controls: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 60 more minutes for the next 20 moves, then 30 more minutes till the end of the game. The organizers were Aeroflot - Russian Airlines, the Association of Chess Federations (of Northwest Russia) and the Committee on Tourism of the Municipality of Moscow. Chief organizer and tournament director: Alexander Bakh. Chief arbiter: Geurt Gijssen. The organizers provided about 94 pgn's + scanned scoresheets for almost all games.

Viktor Antonovich Bologan won on tiebreak ahead of Aleksandrov, Fedorov and Svidler, all four with 7/9. Bologan qualified for Dortmund Sparkassen (2003) (which he also won).

Jan-30-07  positionalgenius: Bologan finished ahead of prominent players like Morozevich,Grischuk,Aronian and Svidler to qualify for the 2003 Dortmund tournament. He ended up winning it.
