Sally Simpson: This was a great event. I covered it for some magazines and did videos, interviews and did a daily Chandler Cornered and put up the 'Best Blunder' prize. (a trophy and other goodies.)

I took and posted 100's of pictures (well not 100's but quite a lot.)

In the preview https://web.archive.org/web/2010010... I interviewed not the players but a few chess pieces. I recall interviewing the Black c-pawn.

"Hi. Looking forward to the tournament."

"You have to be kidding. I'm a c-pawn and this lot are Sicilian experts. I see 1.e4 and before you can say 'play the Pirc' I'm on c5. two moves later I'm off the board."

That kind of thing.

The coverage of the rounds starts here

Round One: https://web.archive.org/web/2010010...

Round Two: https://web.archive.org/web/2009072...

Round Three: https://web.archive.org/web/2009072...

Round Four: https://web.archive.org/web/2010010...

Round Five: https://web.archive.org/web/2010010...

Round Six: https://web.archive.org/web/2010010...

Round Seven: https://web.archive.org/web/2010010...

Around about here I was getting a row for not showing the GM games or producing a table. So I gave them a link where the GM games could be found and produced a table from the 2007 event. I never heard anymore about it after that.

Retireborn: Geoff, you might be amused by jargon created by Cambridge stidents around 30 years ago.

The pawns are named Alfie, Bertie, Charlie, Derek, Eddie, Freddie, Graham, and Harry, and the knights are Neddy and Norman.

King Kenny is my own more recent contribution to the joke.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Retireborn,

I think I have seen something like it. I l know someone came up with female names for the pawns and I suggested The Gertrude (1.g4) was a great name for the Grob and Fanny for the f-pawn.

They thought I was being rude until I pointed out Nelson's wife was called Fanny....but yes I was being rude.

BTW in Caxton's 'The Game and Playe of the Chesse' all the pawns are given names. Innkeeper, doctor, blacksmith etc.. so naming pawns is not too original.
