  REFINE SEARCH:   White wins (1-0) | Black wins (0-1) | Draws (1/2-1/2)

Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-04-18  Harvestman: Maybe not the highest echelon players here, but still some very good ones, and a lot of decisive games too.
Jun-06-18  bavaria: Shanky imitates the real Houdini in this tournament. He wins lost positions, for instance against Flores.
Jun-09-18  PhilFeeley: Canadian Raja Panjwani doing well here.
Jun-09-18  morfishine: <Harvestman> Its an 11 round Swiss with 168 players and one section, from what I can tell. For example, Palacio was the 151st ranked player in the field with a rating of ~1663. His first round opponent was Borges with a rating of ~2216. Borges promptly dispatched Palacio in 26 moves. Palacio then had to face Vasquez rated 2285 and was annihilated in 24 moves

These 1-section swisses can be brutal but I guess these provide valuable training ground for lesser players

*****

Jun-09-18  Marmot PFL: 25 moves in and looks like Xiong will resign soon.
Jun-09-18  Marmot PFL: Xiong's Bishop unable to stop Shank's 5 connected passed pawns (surprise surprise).
Jun-10-18  Doniez: Shankland is still on fire after the US championships
Jun-10-18  morfishine: This really has been a highly competitive event!
Jun-10-18  WorstPlayerEver: "The 2018 Continental Championship will take place in Montevideo, Uruguay, May 31 – June 10. Please see full information here. This is an 11-Round SS event, 40/90, SD/30 with 30-second increment from move 1. In accordance with the FIDE Table for Direct Titles, this event qualifies for direct titles and norms. In addition to the $20,000 in cash prizes (see Section VI), the top four players will qualify for the next FIDE World Cup."

Jun-10-18  devere: Shankland wins in round 11 to finish with a 9-2 score. Since he also defeated Diego Flores in their individual encounter, Shankland will also finish first in the tournament. Congratulations to Samuel Shankland on his latest tournament victory. He is now rated 2727.2 and ranked 27th in the world.
Jun-10-18  morfishine: Congratulations Grandmaster Shankland! This is a great victory against difficult opposition! You are on an incredible run!
Jun-10-18  jphamlore: Was Shankland's real goal in this event to qualify for World Cup 2019? Finishing in clear first was the only sure to do so, which he accomplished. It seems a huge mass of players are stuck playing a tiebreak for the final 2 spots for World Cup 2019.
Jun-11-18  jphamlore: I think Jorge Cori, as I would have expected, at least finished first in what appears to have been a round-robin rapid tiebreak among the final 6 competitors for the 2 remaining spots for World Cup?

Tabanus: Xiong also 7.5. If his round 11 win vs Ivan Eduardo Morovic-Fernandez was in, the table would be more correct.
Jun-11-18  WorstPlayerEver: Congrats to Shankland!
Jun-11-18  jphamlore: Awonder Liang cost himself a golden chance to win a spot in World Cup 2019 by scoring only a half-point in 2 games combined when he opened 1. b3 as White. I refuse to believe either Kasparov or Chernin told him to do this at one of the biggest events of his chess career. Absolutely ridiculous and disgusting to see yet another American chess prodigy go off the rails in the openings.

Dionysius1: I hadn't read the rumour that Kasparov or Chernin had told Awonder Liang to play 1.b3. Really? Crikey!
Jun-11-18  tim butler: What next for Sam Shankland?
