European Championship (Women) (2002) |
The 3rd European Women's Individual Championship was a 113-player 11-round Swiss tournament held at the Marina Hotel in Varna, Bulgaria, from 27 May to 8 June 2002, with a rest day on 2 June (after Round 6) and a day for playoffs on 8 June. It was organized by the Bulgarian Chess Federation under the auspices of the European Chess Union and with the support of the State Agency for Youth and Sport of the Republic of Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, Varna Municipality, and Ustrem'97 Tourist Agency. The first 12 players would qualify for the 2003/04 World Chess Championship. Time control: 90 minutes for the whole game, with 30 seconds added per move starting from move 1. If players were tied for medals or qualifying places ties would be broken by a knockout system, each match consisting of two Rapid games (15 min + 10 sec) and if necessary two Blitz games (5 min + 2 sec) and an Armageddon game. Prize fund: about 28,000 euros. First prize: about 5,200 euros. Chief arbiter: Zdravko Nedev. Number of games played: 610 Classical + 24 Rapid + 6 Blitz + 2 Armageddon = 642. Antoaneta Stefanova won with 9/11, ahead of Lilit Mkrtchian (8.5/11). Galliamova beat Zhaoqin Peng in the tiebreak match for 3rd place. In addition to the players with 7.5/11 or more, the tiebreak matches for qualification between the 14 players with 7/11 also qualified Khurtsidze, Bojkovic and Jackova for the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2004).
