The second Torneo de Arturo Alesandri Palma was held from April 20th to May 6th, 1959 in Santiago, Chile. Thirteen grandmasters and masters from Europe and the Americas competed in the round robin event. The participants from Europe included Borislav Ivkov from Yugoslavia and Ludek Pachman from Czechoslovakia. The players from the Americas included sixteen year old Bobby Fischer from the United States, João de Souza Mendes from Brazil, Luis Augusto Sanchez from Venezuela, Herman Pilnik and Raul Sanguineti from Argentina, and Walter Ader Hausman, Rodrigo Flores Alvarez, Carlos Jauregui, Rene Letelier Martner, Julio Salas Romo and Moises Stekel Grunberg from Chile. This was an important tournament for Fischer, who was just beginning to compete in international events. He won as many games (seven) as tournament co-winners Ivkov and Pachman, but lost four games while drawing only one, finishing in a tie for 4th-6th place at +3. The final standings and crosstable:

A trio of interesting stories took place: in Pachman vs Fischer, 1959 (Round 6), L Sanchez vs Pachman, 1959 (Round 9) (uncorking Fischer's idea of f4 on the 10th move before Pachman could get any deeper into his own idea) and C Jauregui vs Fischer, 1959 (Round 10) (all were white wins). Fischer and Pachman were sparring with each others' opening preparation for the tournament. The amicable pair had toured just a couple of weeks previously, after the Mar del Plata (1959) tournament wrapped up to enjoy a short vacation.Original collection: Game Collection: Santiago 1959, by User: suenteus po 147.
