Las Palmas (1977) The 6th Gran Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez «Ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria» was played in Hotel Santa Catalina in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain, from 8-27 May 1977. Rest days: 11, 15, 19, 23 and 26 May. On Karpov's birthday 23 May, the players had an excursion with dinner to the south of the island. Chief arbiter: Antonio Medina Garcia. World champion Anatoly Karpov outclassed the field with 13.5/15, yielding just three draws as Black and winning the rest of his games. Hernandez took his first GM norm, and Debarnot his final IM norm. Was it probably 2590? Those days, ability to maintain a rating of higher than around 2575 would have been enough to be part of the elite, if I understand it correctly. In general european rating is (or was ? , believe it stil is so) around 100 ratingpoints lower than the US. Yup, those days, Larsen must be one of the true top players, say, just one rung of the ladder below the world champion. Must be a nice chess experience to be able to play such an opponent, even in a simul.
