For those who like to watch live chess, the new round is starting right now (8:45am USA Eastern time).

Aug-21-07  Karpova: IBCA = Inthernational Braille Chess Association

For blind and partially blind chessplayers (but they try to include every visually impaired chessplayers, e.g. deafblind ones).

Aug-21-07  pawnofdoom: How do blind players play chess? The photos on the official site show players playing with two boards per game, and the pieces for those boards have pegs to go into the holes on the board. How does that work?
Aug-21-07  savagerules: Would a top rank blind player be better than a GM playing blindfolded? It'd be a interesting match maybe.
Aug-22-07  paavoh: <pawnofdoom> The pegs hold the pieces attached to the board while the blind players "feel" the position with their hands. One can distinguish between black and white squares with the latter being just a bit elevated, so the board surface is not even. I once played a blind man in a Swiss tournament in my youth in the 80s, and it was not an easy task to beat him. I had a normal board on which I kept tabs on the position as well. Of course the touch rule did not apply to him :-)
Aug-22-07  pawnofdoom: <paavoh> thanks
Aug-22-07  weary willy: Interested to see Colin Crouch here ... does he now have a sight disability?
Aug-23-07  pawnofdoom: <weary willy> Im pretty sure he does. If he didn't he wouldn't be playing here would he?
Aug-25-07  Mameluk: Should be mentioned, that Czech player Jaroslav Olsar won. Interesting to see so many IM´s in this tournament.
Nov-26-07  Gallicrow: Apparently Colin Crouch had a stroke and is now partially sighted: http://www.bbc.co.uk/wear/content/a...
