Chisinau Interzonal (Women) (1995) |
"On Sunday, September 3, at 2 pm, the official opening of the competition took place. The President of the International Chess Federation (F.I.D.E.), Mr. Florencio Campomanes, was present at this occasion. The official opening was also honored by the presence of the President of the Republic of Moldova, Mr. Mircea Snegur. At 3 pm at the "House of Friendship", the first round of the interzonal tournament began." (Timișoara 1995-09-05, transl.) "If men's chess is dominated by the former Soviet countries, centered on Russia, in women's chess, Georgia is the country that contributes the best players to the world elite. Although the Polgar sisters and current champion Jun Xie could be excluded from this category, in the last Interzonal Tournament, held in the Moldovan city of Kishinev, Georgian chess players once again occupied the top spots. The highest finisher was Ketevan Arakhamia, who defeated China's Zhu in the final round to claim the victory." (Jaque, transl.)
