Elvira Berend is the younger sister of WIM Gulnara Sachs (née Sakhatova). In 1988, she finished 12th in the USSR Women's Chess Championship final. Berend twice represented the Kazakh SSR team in the Soviet Team Chess Championships (1986, 1991), winning the team silver medal in 1991.1 After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, she represented Kazakhstan. In 1995, Elvira Berend finished 14th in the Women's World Chess Championship Interzonal Tournament in Chişinău. In 1997, she won the European Women's speed Championship in Athens and an international chess tournament in Luxembourg City. In the second half of the 1990s, Sakhatova married Luxembourg International Master Fred Berend , and since 1997 she has represented Luxembourg in chess events.
Elvira Berend played for both Kazakhstan and Luxembourg in the following events:
-Women's Chess Olympiads (1992–1996, 2004, 2008), winning the individual bronze medal
-Men's Chess Olympiad (2014)
-European Men's Team Chess Championship (2005)
-Women's Asian Team Chess Championship (1995), winning the team bronze and individual silver medals.
-In 1995, she became the first female chess player in Kazakhstan to receive the FIDE Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title.
