 | | HeMateMe: would be interesting to see if some private financier, maybe a bank or insurance firm, put up some money for a match between Carlsen and the winner. It would be a non-title match, less pressure than the FIDE matches Carlsen has been playing for six years. Of course MC would be recognized as world champion even if it isn't the FIDE match. He is anyhow, right now. |

 | | offramp: Dommaraju Gukesh, 16 years old, finished 1st= with Aronian and Nepo. That is a great result! When he is 21, in 5 years time, he will probably get some more top-class results. Not me. I think he will have more or less given up chess by the age of 21. By then he will be a systems analyst. I think this was a very good tournament, but it had a couple of boring players, who suck the life out of the tournament. Specifically I mean <Wesley So> and <Anish Giri>. Nice enough geezers, but they are usually aiming for +1 or (rarely) +2. These two guys choose dull openings in which they can out-technique their opponents with their extra 100 Elo points. Nepo is the same, but it is impossible to drop him, except after he has been beaten by Ding Liren. Mind you, Nepo will be an outstanding commentator. Dortmund ended up with
White wins, 9 = 20%
Black wins, 2 = 7%
Draws, 32 = 73%.
That's a lot, but there were many very interesting draws. |
