Introduction
British Chess Club.—The entries for the proposed handicap are progressing favourably, and the contest is expected to commence on Monday next. Entrance fee 10s 6d., and prizes, offered conditionally upon the number of competitors, £40. (1)

British Chess Club.—The first general meeting took place on Wednesday, Feb. 16, Mr. Newnes in the chair. The officers elected are—President: Mr. Newnes, M.P.; Vice-Presidents: Messrs Wordsworth Donisthorpe, Thos. Hewitt, and F. H. Lewis; Hon. Secretary: Mr. H. F. Lowe, M.A. The committee will be elected by ballot, according to the opinion expressed by the meeting. The rules were read and adopted, and a playing committee elected, composed of Messrs. Donisthorpe, Guest, Gwinner, Woodgate, and Lewis. The functions of these gentlemen wil be to draw up the rules for the handicap, to be played at the Club, and to handicap the players. The programme has been issued since, and the following prizes promised: First, £20; second, £12; third, £6; and fourth, £2. Entrance fee, 10s. 6. Should the entries exceed thirty, there will be three sections; if less than fifteen, there will be only one. Some of the masters and a large number of amateurs have entered their names, and the contest bids fair to be very interesting. (2)

The handicap tournament of the British Chess Club commenced on Monday, with the following sixteen competitors:
First class—Messrs Gunsberg, Hoffer, and Zukertort give the odds of two moves to the second class, Messrs Hewett, Mills, Maudell (sic; Mundell), and Wainwright; P and move to third class, Messrs Marett and Trenchard; P and two moves to fourth class, Messrs Cathcart, Lowe, and Mackeson; knight to fifth class, Messrs Ingoldsby and Rabson; and knight and move to the sixth class, Messrs Bennett and Levinson. (3)

Although Levinson is listed as a participant, it would appear he was replaced by Ridpath; no mention has been found regarding this substitution.

The handicap tournament of the British Chess Club is concluded, as far as the prize winners are concerned. Some of the remaining players have to conclude their games for the next places. The winners are: First prize, J. H. Zukertort; second prize L. Hoffer; third and fourth prizes, tie and division between J (sic). Gunsberg and D. Y. Mills. (4)

Mr Mundell forfeited two games to Messrs Lowe and Ridpath. (5)

OhioChessFan: What happened to Levinson? And what's up with Maudell/Mundell?

OhioChessFan: So Ridpath apparently replaced Levinson. That should be mentioned in the writeup.

Good question. I honestly didn't notice that when I compiled those reports.

I double checked the <British Chess Magazine>, <The Field>, and <The Morning Post>, all give Levinson in the list of entrants. I then checked the same sources, along with the <Chess Monthly> and the <Chess Player's Chronicle>, and I found no mention of Ridpath replacing Levinson other than Ridpath being the player showing up in the cross tables published during and after the event.

I will add something to the write-up per your suggestion.

MissScarlett: <Edward Ridpath> was a member of the British and City of London clubs around this period. There's also a <J Ridpath> to be seen on occasion who I think is his brother <James>.

jnpope: Team match reports from 1886 and 1888 show <J Ridpath> in Hastings, so probably Edward in this event?

Just a wild guess.

beatgiant: Ancestry.com shows a P.H. Cathcart in the London City Directory 1900, 1905 and 1910 but the only detail is "Occupation: Board of Trade, Patent Office."

MissScarlett: <P. H. Cathcart, Ealing> crops up several times in the <Globe>'s chess column as a successful problem solver during 1911. The death of <Percy Howell Cathcart> of the Patent Office and Ealing is noticed in the <Morning Advertiser> of January 27th 1912, p.1.

offramp: Mr Albert Einstein was a Patent Technical Examiner 1902 to 1909.

Perhaps Einstein could meet up with Mr Cathcart in the celestial patent office.

Almost certainly - no indication that <J Ridpath> played for the British CC.

The Hastings connection is interesting - the Ridpath family are Londoners, but when father <George Ridpath> dies in 1881, leaving over £70,000, <Edward>, already 50, finds himself a 24 year old wife from Hastings within the year. They apparently divide their time between London and Hastings. The wife's name is <Ellen Georgiana Ridpath Welsh> suggesting some family connection, but it's not obvious from online family trees.

Just a key/legend. I was questioned about what the math symbols meant once, so I started adding legends to the bottom of cross tables that feature those symbols.

OhioChessFan: Okay, it's the template for all tournament results, whether there were unplayed games that specific tournament or not.

jnpope: I try to use it for just the tables that have those symbols; in this tournament Mundell had two unplayed games, hence the legend.

Sometimes the legend does sneak into tables where every game got played due to some neglect when I build a new table. I do have a template for building tables and the legend is there by default as I'd rather have it unnecessarily instead of forgetting to add it when necessary.
