One classical tournament victory, although even Norway included an Armageddon element.

Atterdag: Very impressiv list - thanks <Miss S>.

It seems that getting rid of the obligations connected to the title has done a lot for Carlsen's creativity and pure joy of playing chess.

We, the spectators, are fortunate to be able to enjoy how this genius unfolds his art in numerous spectacular games, be they classics, rapids or blitzes.

Nov-17-24  stone free or die: The year is almost over, and only one Classic in the list.

How many other tournaments did Carlsen play in that he didn't win?

Atterdag: <stone free or die: The year is almost over, and only one Classic in the list. ...> True, but I think it was expected since Carlsen has not felt up to playing classical chess for quite a while. Another reason for not having the motivation for another match with Nepo. Personally, I don't blame him.

Nepo - in my eyes - is a very unstable person with some signs of strange quirky behavior - from his total nervous break-down in the Carlsen match (and partly in the last game vs. Ding Liren in their match) to occasional megalomania and paranoia (allegations of fraud). A brilliant player, no doubt, but also a player now deeply disappointed of having been so close without the cigar. He is, however, certainly not the only high-end chessplayer throughout history with these edges.

Nov-17-24  Bobby Fiske: <One classical tournament victory, although even Norway included an Armageddon element.> The Freestyle Chess Tournament featured, for the first time in tournament history, Fischer Random games with Classical time control.

Atterdag: I honestly didn't have that in my mind, but now I see it's pretty close to a portrait of that nation (sans the violence).
