The 9-round Swiss Open (Magistral) tournament of the 16th Carlos Torre Repetto Memorial took place in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, 12-20 December 2003. Rounds 3 & 4 were both played on 14 December. Rest day: 17 December. Most of the participants were rated above 2200. After six rounds the leading 12 players joined the Carlos Torre Memorial (2003) (Wimbledon) knockout tournament, from which the eighthfinal losers could rejoin the Open tournament's Round 7 on 18 December. Vadim Milov (who rejoined from the Wimbledon eiththfinal) won with 7.5/9. Final standings (top 23 players, from TWIC): 1 Milov Vadim SUI GM 2574 7.5

Dec-21-03 | | shadowmaster: Some info on this tourney from the TWIC website: <The XVI Carlos Torre Memorial takes place in Merida in the Yucatan region of Mexico 12th-20th December 2003. 6 Round Swiss followed by a knockout. The top 12 in the Swiss qualified and were joined by Alexei Dreev, Boris Gelfand, Valery Filippov and Liviu-Deter Nisipeanu. Surprisingly Yuniesky Quezada (who beat both Gelfand and Filippov) won the event. Knockout has 2 90 minute games followed if needed by 2 15 minute games followed by sudden death 5 minute games.> |
