Apr-10-13  JimNorCal: I believe that Sir G A Thomas won the previous year (3 way tie for first) but came in last this year.

Phony Benoni: <JimNorCal> That was two years previously: Hastings 1934/35 (1934). Of course, the field wasn't all that strong.

perfidious: <JimNorCal>: Thomas actually finished first equal two years before:

Apr-10-13  JimNorCal: <Phony Benoni> and <perfidious>: Thanks for the correction. However...in terms of the strength of the field in the 34/35 Hastings, the wikipedia link says this: "[Thomas] shared first prize at the 1934/5 Hastings International Chess Congress with the next world chess champion Max Euwe and leading Czechoslovak player Salo Flohr, ahead of past and future world champions José Raúl Capablanca and Mikhail Botvinnik, whom he defeated in their individual games."

Yike! Euwe, Botvinnik, Capablanca...sounds strong to me!

perfidious: <JimNorCal> Glad you read the Wiki entry after I edited it, as Flohr had been listed as a Soviet national-which he did not become till after the German invasion, several years on.
