Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Ter Apel (1992)

"The floor in the large hall of the Boschhuis hotel is still creaking. The screeching sound would drive grandmaster chess players mad elsewhere, but in Ter Apel the creaking has been accepted effortlessly for five years. The floorboards are allowed to continue to groan with impunity, because the top chess players would never dream of criticizing the organizers of the annual Monastery Chess Tournament. On the contrary, according to tournament director Heribert Hake they are still pushing to be invited to the event. Why? Well, they come to the idyllic monastery village to relax and would not miss the late-night hours at the regulars' table in the taproom for anything. This year's six participants - Epishin, Adams, Van der Sterren, Vaganian, Christiansen and Sosonko - have an average rating of 2575, which puts the tournament in strength category fourteen. For comparison: the well-known Hoogovens chess tournament is also in that class. The players may divide the prize money of twelve thousand among themselves and in addition they receive a starting fee plus room and board. And if you believe them, the rustic location of the border town and the friendly atmosphere of the tournament are at least as important to them as the financial gain."
