Ter Apel (1993) |
"In the far north lies Ter Apel, a village with a special chess club. This club, with seventeen members, conceived the ambitious plan six years ago to organize a strong grandmaster tournament. Sponsors were attracted with all their might and the municipality also made its contribution. Chairman of the chess club, Henk Woortmeijer, who holds a position within the municipality, tells with due pride how they succeeded for the second time in organizing a category fourteen six-player tournament. "Without the tireless chess journalist Berry Withuis, who makes contacts with the grandmasters, we would not have succeeded. We have therefore contracted Mr. Withuis until the year 2000!" Because of all this, the club has a high budget and the municipal council often has to meet for long periods to convince the sceptics that the chess club has a lot of credit."
