Introduction
Masters' Tournament.—Open to all the world, and conducted on the same rules (with modifications) as those of the London International Tournament of 1883. First prize, £60; second prize, £25; third prize, £15; fourth prize, £5. Entrance fees, £2 each, all of which fees will be appropriated to consolation prizes for the masters, and deposit, £1 each, which will be returned under the conditions specified in the rules. These prizes are guaranteed, but they may be increased in amount without any increase of entrance fees. (1)
The fourth prize was increased by the President from £5 to £10. (2)
Conclusion
The entrance fees, amounting to £22, were divided among the unsuccessful competitors, according to the number and value of their wins. By this arrangement Mason received £5 14s 8d, Gunsberg £4 18s 6d, Thorold £2 14s 6d, Pollock £2 12s 2d, Ranken £2 7s 6d, Skipworth £2 6s 6d, and Owen £1 6s 2d. Rev A B Skipworth won a special prize of three guineas, presented by Rev J Greene, for the highest scorer among the non winners, who had been a member of the Counties Chess Association for at least three years. The prizes were consequently gained as follows:—
First, £60, J. H. Blackburne, London.
Second, £25. Third, £15. Divided between I (sic; E). Schallopp, Berlin, and H. E. Bird, London.
Fourth, £10, G. E (sic; H). Mackenzie, New York.
Rev. J. Green's Prize of £3 2s, in books, plate, or any small work of art, in accordance with the desire of the winner, for the highest player among the non-winners who has been a member of the Counties' Chess Association for at least three years, was won by Mr. Skipworth.
Consolation Prizes (from the entrance fees):—
