1985 World Chess Championship
Compiled by Penguincw
--*--

★★★ INTRO ★★★

The 1985 World Chess Championship was between 34 year old defending champion Anatoly Karpov of the Soviet Union and 22 year old challenger Garry Kasparov also of the Soviet Union.

★★★ BACKGROUND ★★★

In the Game Collection: 1984 World Chess Championship, the match took up to 48 games, so the match was called off. There would a new match start in a few months. This time, it was back to the old format of best of 24, and if the match is tied, then the champion retains his title. However, Karpov was leading the 1984-85 match, so if he lost this match, he would be allowed a re-match the following year.

★★★ CONDITIONS ★★★

The match took place in Moscow. The format this time was back to best of 24 (first to 12 1/2 points). If the match ends tied 12-12, Karpov would retain his title. The first game was played on September 3rd, 1985.

★★★ FINAL ★★★

The last round (24) was played on November 24th, 1985. Entering the round, Kasparov led 12-11, and just needed a draw with the black pieces. It was actually a winner takes all game (if Karpov wins, money split), with a draw going to Kasparov. In that game, Karpov build up an attack, but Kasparov defended well, and under pressure from the clock, Karpov blundered and lost the game in a couple more moves, making it a 13-11 win for Kasparov.
