★★★ INTRO ★★★
The 1984 World Chess Championship was between 33 year old defending champion Anatoly Karpov of the Soviet Union and 22 year old challenger Garry Kasparov also of the Soviet Union.

★★★ QUALIFICATIONS ★★★

Karpov for the third time in a row defended his title against Korchnoi (see: Game Collection: 1981 World Chess Championship for games and more info), and it was time for a new challenger.

This time, a slightly different format was once. Instead of two interzonal tournaments, there were 3, with the top 2 advancing.

In the first one (see: Game Collection: Las Palmas Interzonal 1982 for games), the favourites were Petrosian (7.5/13), Timman and Larsen (6.5/13). However, it was Ribli and Smyslov They scored 9 and 8 1/2 points respectively.

Two months later, the second one (see: Game Collection: Moscow Interzonal 1982 for games and more info) took place in Moscow. Kasparov, Beliavsky, Tal and Andersson were the favourites. However, Kasparov won with 10/13, one and a half ahead of Beliavsky. Tal and Andersson both scored 8/13, and played for a reserve spot (see: Game Collection: 1983 match:Andersson-Tal for games and more info), in case someone decides to not play in the Candidates. The match ended up being tied, with Tal placing ahead Andersson on tie breaks. This eventually was not needed.

In the last interzonal (see: Game Collection: Toluca Interzonal 1982 for games), the favourites were Portisch, Polugaevsky and Spassky were favourites. Portisch and Torre both tied for 8.5/13, Spassky places half a point back, and Polugaevsky another half back.

In the Candidates, the two finalists from last time, Korchnoi and Hübner, joined the 6 players. In Rd.1, it was a best of 10 (first to 5 1/2). The quarter-finals saw Kasparov down Beliavsky 6-3, Korchnoi beat Portisch with the same score, and Ribli defeated Torre 6-4. Smyslov and Hübner were tied after 10, and after 4 more games were still tied. The winner (Smyslov) won a roulette wheel spin.

There were problems starting the semi-final Kasparov-Korchnoi match, and Kasparov forfeited the match. However, the match did get started, and even though Kasparov lost the first game, he came back and won 7-4 in the best of 12 (first to 6 1/2). The other match saw Smyslov beat Ribli 7 1/2-4 1/2.

The final match was best of 16 (first to 8 1/2). Kasparov easily won the match 8 1/2-4 1/2, and earned the right to challenge Karpov for the title.

★★★ CONDITIONS ★★★

The match took place in Moscow, Soviet Union. It was the same format as last time, which was first to win 6 games, draws not counting, with unlimited # of games. Note: This match is measured in wins. Total score is in brackets. The first round was played on September 10th, 1984. The last round was played on February 10th, 1985.

★★★ FINAL ★★★
The last round (48) was played on February 10th, 1985. Karpov had the black pieces and for the 21st game in a row, needed just a win to defend his title. However, Kasparov managed to win that game to make the match score 5-3 in Karpov's favour. However, the match took nearly 5 months, and the FIDE President at the time, Florencio Campomanes, decided to end the match as so, and make a re-match later in the year. However, Karpov's lead was wiped away, so if he lost in 1985, he has a right for a re-match in 1986.
