Manila 1973
Compiled by Tabanus
--*--

The event was sponsored by Ferdinand Marcos, the President of the Philippines (1965-1986), with Florencio Campomanes as primary organizer. It became known as the 1st Philippines International Chess Tournament and was the first of its kind in Asia. The opening was performed by Marcos and the World Champion Robert James Fischer, who made the ceremonial moves (directly on television and before a crowd of 10,000).

Larsen won 9 games in a row (rounds 6-14) and took 1st prize (4000 USD). The 1st brilliancy prize (1000 USD, handed over by Marcos) went to Lombardy for Lombardy vs Quinteros, 1973. After the tournament, nine of the players plus the TV commentator Samuel Estimo went to La Union (260 km N of Manila) to play in Bauang (1973). The two events marked the beginning of an era in Philippine chess with GM tournaments that would culminate in Baguio City with the Karpov - Korchnoi World Championship Match (1978).

A 'round by round' table can be found at http://www.torneionline.com/loto/lo.... Bent Larsen wrote a piece in Skakbladet vol. 70 pp. 4-6, 19-20 & 33-34, and the tournament book Otte om kongen (Ruder 7, Copenhagen 1974. 134 pp.) (in Danish). Pairings and round dates are from this book. Five games in round 1 were played on October 20.
