-Gedimins Salmins "Korespondence Sahs Latvija 1877-1944" Liepaja 2005

------------------

"Riga sāk un uzvar"

Deviņdesmito gadu pirmajā pusē, kā to pierāda dažādos izdevumos publicētās partijas, aktīvākie korespondencšaga spēlētāji bija K. Betins, P. Kerkovius, A. Leuth, V. Svensons, E. Vagenheims - visi Rigas Šaha biedrība- T. Briedis - Liepaja.

Neklātienes cīņās iesaistījās ne tikai pilsētās, bet ari dziļā provincē dzivojošie šahisti. Straujiem soļiem tuvojās Rigas Šaha biedrības korespondencšahistu uzvaras gājiens, gadu gaitā sešos mačos pieveicot Orlu, Moskava, Berlin, un Stokholmu ar rezultātu 10:2 - +8 =4 !

Atsevišķu entuziastu kaisītā sēkla bija kritusi auglīgā augsnē.

"Riga Starts and Wins"

In the first half of the nineties, according to the parties published in various editions, the most active correspondent players were K. Bettin, P. Kerkovius, A. Leuth, V. Svensson, E. Vagenheim - all of Riga Chess Society - T. Briedis - Liepaja.

Out-of-town battles involved not only urban but also deep-seated chess players. Rapid steps were approached by the victory march of the correspondent chess club of Riga, beating Orl, Moscow, Berlin, and Stockholm in six matches over the years with a score of 10: 2 - +8 = 4!

The seed spilled by some enthusiasts had fallen on fertile soil.

p. 25

Sešas uzvaras sešos mačos, iespaidīga iegūto un zaudēto punktu attiecība 10:2, nezaudējot nevienu partiju, ar šādu bilanci nevarēja lepoties neviena no pažistamajām šaha beidrībām un Riga ieguva neieņemama šaha cietokšņa slavu.

---

With six wins in six matches, an impressive win-lose ratio of 10: 2 without losing a single hand, such a balance could not boast any familiar chess odds and Riga won the reputation of an unbeatable chess fortress.

"Latvijas šacha galvenā reprezentētāja - Riga skaitijās par vienu no stiprākajām šacha citadelēm, pateicoties viņas izciliem panākumiem un nopeiniem daudzās šacha nozarēs, it ipaši tājsacikstēs "

---

"Latvian Chess Chief Representative - Riga recites one of the strongest chess citations due to her outstanding achievements and her speed in many areas of chess, especially her races"

=================

"From 1899 to 1921, under the leadership of Paul Kerkovius, the editor-in-chief, the Society enjoyed the greatest prosperity in its history and laid the foundation stone for its good reputation, which made the Rigas Schacha known throughout the world. and Moscow. "

Karl Betin, who has won the fame of an outstanding analyst, has been instrumental in forging Riga's correspondence chess victories.

City of Jelgava v. City of Tartu (1877 May 31 - 1879 May) Two year game

-Salmins pp.15-16

---

Currently the first correspondence party in Latvia to be regarded as the one played by the Jelgava Amateur Society Chess Club (founded around 1876) with the strong, if not the strongest in the Baltics, Tartu University Chess Society.

On May 31, 1877, the Jelgava chess players sent their first march e2-e4. Until the 25th march, the party was published in the "Mitausche Zeitung". After two years of playing at Easter 1879, Jelgava residents declared themselves victorious.

City of Daugavpils v. City of Tartu Match

Played concurrently 1893-1894

Salmins pp.20-23

1893. gada sākumā Daugavpils šahisti uzsāka divu partiju maču ar Tartu šahistiem. Pēc toreizējā administratīvā iedalījuma Daugavpils atradās Vitebskas guberņā. Līdz ar to Baltische Schachblatter lappusēs nav atrodama informācija par Daugavpils šahistiem, to skaitu, citām aktivitātēm, bet abas partijas un komentāri ir pārpublicēti no laikraksta Rigaer Tageblatt šaha nodaļas. Spriežot pēc izdarītā gājienu skaita un partiju izspēlei patērētā laika, gājienu paziņošanai abas puses visticamāk izmantojušas telegrāfu.

---

In the beginning of 1893 Daugavpils chess players started a two-party match with Tartu chess players. After the administrative division of that time Daugavpils was located in Vitebsk province. As a result, the pages of Baltische Schachblatter do not contain information on Daugavpils chess players, their numbers, other activities, but both parties and comments have been republished from the chess section of the newspaper Rigaer Tageblatt. Judging by the number of moves made and the time spent playing the games, both parties were likely to use a telegraph to announce the moves.

Riga vs Orel

p.24

---

In October 1896, a two-party match between the Riga Chess Society and Orl Chess Society began. Knowing that in Tsarist Russia Orla was not a notable chess center even in later years, why should Riga chess players choose and invite the chess players of that city as their opponents? The answer to this question is not to be found in the sixth and seventh year of activity of the Riga Chess Society. In contrast, chairman of the challenge P. Kerkovius' extensive review of 'Das Rigaer Schachleben in den Jahren 1870-1900' only mentions' victorious matches by correspondence and telegraph with the chess clubs of Orl and Moscow. ' Perhaps there were big fans of the royal game at that time on the board of the Riga-Orla Railway?

The match lasted until January 1896 and ended with a 2-0 victory for the Rigans, forged by Karl Behting, Robert Behting, Paul Kerkovius, Piers Bohl, August Lueth and Ottomar Heinrich von Haken.

Sava pirmā panākuma iedvesmoti, "Rīgas šahisti nometa izaicinājuma cimdu" Maskavas Šaha biedrībai. 1899. gada novembri mačs sākās. Gājienu nosūtīšanai izmantoja telegrāfu un spēle noritēja ievērojami raitāk. 1900. gada apriļa sākumā maskavieši padevās vienā partijā, bet otrā pieņēma piedāvāto neizšķirtu. Šo partiju vadība bija uzticēta Karl Behting, Robert Behting, Paul Kerkovius, Th Mueller un Voldemar Voldemars Svensons.

---

Inspired by their first success, "Riga chess players dropped a challenge glove" for the Moscow Chess Society. In November 1899 the match began. Telegraphs were used to send the turn and the game went much faster. At the beginning of April 1900, Muscovites resigned one game and accepted a proposed draw in the other. The leadership of these games was entrusted to Karl Behting, Robert Behting, Paul Kerkovius, Th Mueller and Voldemar Voldemars Svensons..

Riga v Stockholm

p.24

-------------

Appetite comes from eating - this expression seems to have been chosen by the chess players of the Riga Chess Society as a guideline for their next course of action, inviting January to October and ending with a 1.5: 0.5 victory for Rigans. After losing Stockholm - Riga, the Swedish chess players did not continue the second ... Although Riga was more of a pawn and a good game, the Rigans acted like real "chess gentlemen" and satisfied with a draw.

Savu ceturto maču Rigas Šaha biedrības aizvadija ar Berlin Šaha sabeidribu - Schachgesselschaft - laikā no 1906 gada oktobra līdz 1908. gada aprilim. Un atkal triumfēja rīdzinieki ar rezultātu 2:0. Ceturtais mačs - ceturtā uzvara!

Partijā Berlin - Riga Ruy Lopez t.s. atklātajā variantā 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Nxe4 6.d4 Rigas šahisti pārsteidza savus partnerus ar jauninājumu 6...exd4. "Teorētisks jaunums, kuru atradis prof. P. Bols, Riga, un kurš toreiz šacha pasaulē izsauca lielu ievēribu. Vēlāk par šo variantu daudz polemizēts, tomēr galigas skaidrības par to vēl nav." Interesanti salīdzināt apdomas laika patēriņu: Berlin 340 dienas, Riga 124. Šo P. Bols turpinājamu sīki jo sīki analizēja daudzos šaha periodikas izdevumos: Lasker's Chess Magazine, Deutsche Schachzeitung - J. Bergers- Tidskrift for Schack -P.Leonhardts and Dr. H.Krauze.- Lielu uzmanību tam veltīja lielmeistars Dr Tarrasch izdevumā Beriner Lokalanzeiger.

Iespējams, ka Berlin un Moskavas šahisti vēlējās revanšēties par piedzīvotajiem zaudējumiem, un laikā lidz Pirmajam pasaules karam notika vēl divi mači.

-------------------

The fourth match of the Riga Chess Society took place between October 1906 and April 1908 against the Berlin Chess club Schachgesselschaft. And again Riga was triumphant with a score of 2: 0. Fourth match - Fourth victory!

In Berlin - Riga Ruy Lopez t.s. in the open version 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Nxe4 6.d4 Rigas chess players surprised their opponents with the novelty 6 ... exd4. "The theoretical novelty found by Prof. P. Bols, Riga, which at that time created a great deal of excitement in the chess world. Later, there has been much controversy about this variant, but there is no definitive clarity on it." It is interesting to compare reflection time consumption: Berlin 340 days, Riga 124. This continuation of P. Bols has been extensively analyzed in numerous chess periodicals: Lasker's Chess Magazine, Deutsche Schachzeitung (J. Bergers), Tidskrift for Schack (P.Leonhardts and Dr. H.Krauze)- Great attention was paid to it by Grand Master Dr. Tarrasch in Beriner Lokalanzeiger.

It is possible that Berlin and Moscow chess players wanted to gain revenge for their losses, since two more matches took place in the period leading up to World War I.

---

The following correspondence game was played 1923-1924 between the 2nd Rigas Shacha Society (now Rigas Shacha Club) and the Ventspils Sacha Society, which was still at its height. The match was two games. Ventspils lost the first game, but won the second in good style.

As the Riga Committee consisted of masters Apšenieks, Hartmanis and Matissons, Ventspils's victory was, in a sense, an ancient one. The Wiener Schachzeitung and Deutsche Schachblatter analyzed this game, and it was also published in Bachman's yearbook of 1924.

The Latvian journals Segodnya and Rigasche Rundschau published the game, but in Latvian newspapers she it was not sufficiently analyzed with notes, which is why we consider it our duty to do so in this magazine.

The Ventspils Games included a committee; V. Weber, L. Wiewiorowski and O. Tideman.

1937-1939 Riga v. Budapest Match

pp.91-92

Trīsdesmitajos gados Ungārijas korespondencšahisti bija vieni no spēcīgākajiem Eiropā.

---

In November 1937 the two-party match Riga - Budapest began. Rig was represented by a strong Senior Club team: K. Betin (team leader), Grand Master V. Petrov, Arvid Kalnin (Chairman of the Latvian Chess Union) and architect P.Dreimanis. After a fierce and prolonged struggle, the two parties ended indecisively. Playing against the whites, Rigas chess players got a little better, but black had to defend themselves for long (after a strategic mistake in 22nd move), but with the inaccuracy of the Hungarian chess players in 39th, they reached the draw.

In the thirties, Hungarian correspondents were among the strongest in Europe.
