Feb-14-12  SuperPatzer77: <sleepyirv: Hey, I know this game! 17... Qh5+
18.gxh5 Rh4#

Anastasia, the most romantic named mate for Valentine's.>

LOL LOL. I know this game, too. I saw this game on Aug 3, 2009.

<sleepyirv> Don't forget Valentine's Day for your girlfriend, fiancée or wife. You can show it to her. ;-)

SuperPatzer77

Feb-14-12  consul: I was looking, in the first minute, on how to make 17 .. Rxe3 work. But then i realized that the Rook can give check after the pawn is deflected...
Feb-14-12  rhickma4: If the White pawn on g4 was not there, both Qh5 and Rh4 would be mate.

17...Qh5+ 0-1

I'm sure Monday and Tuesday go mixed up.

Feb-14-12  dzechiel: Black to move (17...?). Black is up a pawn. "Easy".

Seen this one before. Carlsen winds it up with...

17...Qh5+ 18 gxh5 Rh4#

Feb-14-12  mohannagappan: 17...Qh5+! 18 gxh5 Rh4# lovely
Feb-14-12  BadKnight: Qh5 deflection sac followed by Rh4 mates. I know this game so no test really.
Feb-14-12  DarthStapler: Got it easily, easier than yesterday
Feb-14-12  sevenseaman: Black is a P up.

Question is how'd Carlsen's mind have worked. Mine says perish the Q and use the cleared passage to checkmate with the surprised R.

It doesn't matter too much if Monday and Tuesday have interchanged places.

<17...Qh5+ 18. gxh5 Rh4#>

It makes little difference though but I suspect some deja vu too.

Feb-14-12  M.Hassan: "Easy" Black to play 17....?
Black is a pawn up.
I saw it rather instantly:
17...........Qh5+
18.gxh5 Rh4#
Feb-14-12  TheBish: J L Hammer vs Carlsen, 2003

Black to play (17...?) "Easy"

This one is fairly easy, in that it is simply a mate in 2. The hard part is visualizing the queen sac to open the rook's path to mate.

17...Qh5+! 18. gxh5 Rh4#.

Feb-14-12  sevenseaman: Playing the game, I noticed <Hammer>'s mind was overly occupied with the Black N at e2. In his eagerness to evict the inconvenience he unwittingly transposes into an anvil.
Feb-14-12  Teris: This one was very easy. I got this one in less than a minute and didn't get yesterday's.
Feb-14-12  LoveThatJoker: Cool. A Carlsen puzzle.

This is obviously on one of his earlier games: I remember having seen this game and there is no way he would be play a "not-famous-player" nowadays so.

Anyway, I'm liking 17...Qh5+ 18. gxh5 Rh4#

FSR: This looks much more like a Monday puzzle than Monday's puzzle did: 17...Qh5+ 18.gxh5 Rh4# hammers Hammer. For a counterexample, see J L Hammer vs Carlsen, 2010.

LIFE Master AJ: 17...Qh5+; and 18...Qh4#. [Not much to calculate, the only hard thing to see is to give up the Queen. (I missed a simialr opportunity in one of my games about 3 years ago.) Only thing - this looks familiar to me, I am probably wrong ... but seems like I have seen this one before, or something very similar.]

Time to "peeky."

Oh, by the way, HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!!!!
(Guys, don't forget to get the lady in your life ... something.)

"Game of The Day" back in Aug. 3rd, 2009. (That's why the position looked/felt so familiar.)

Feb-14-12  Once: My darling Valentine, shall I count the ways I love you?

Dearest cuddle kitten, passion princess, I love the way you tease me. With 13...Ne2+, you tickle my king into the corner. You know I like it like that. Remember Bradford?

And I do admire your trust. Sooner or later that knight is going to need emotional support. But you just give without thinking of yourself. Like a candle in the wind.

And I love your generosity of spirit. With 14...Bxg4 15. hxg4 you give up one of your bishops in return for a mere knight. I'm sure you didn't mean to open the h file against my king. Lovers can ignore silly little things like that.

Regrets? I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention. There was that time, I'm sure you knew...

After 15...Rae8, perhaps I should have played 16. a4 Qc4 17. Be3 Rxe4 18. Re1? Then maybe I could have tickled your secret places with Nd2 or Rxe2? We may never know, my cherie, what other pleasures fate might have had in store for two star crossed lovers like us!

I love the way we sometimes know what each other is thinking. Remember when I played 16. Be3 and you said with a twinkle in your eye "17...Rxe4" and I lovingly put my rook on e1? And then when I play a4 we do get to that happy place I was dreaming about?

Maybe I could have played 17. g3. But when a man is in love he doesn't think of prosaic things. He floats on Cupid's wings.

Telepathy. When two people are exactly on each other wavelength. Made for each other.

I love you with all my heart and soul. You are my Fischer and my Tal, the Alekhine of amour. You are the opera game in saucy red underwear. All 64 squares. I want to overprotect you with kisses. Go upstairs to slip into something uncomfortable and then you can castle long into my arms.

There's just one thing. I hate to bring it up on Valentine's day. Don't want to spoil the mood. It's just that ... I've noticed a large hole where my bank account used to be. And I haven't heard from you in days. And your landlady has said that you've moved out of your apartment. Your work say they've never heard of you.

And now, there's a bailiff at the door - 17...Qh5+ - saying that I owe him a surprisingly large amount of money. And if I don't pay up then 18...Rh4#

I'm sure it's all a misunderstanding. That you'll bring my car back fairly soon. And my credit card.

Missing you ...

Feb-14-12  morfishine: <17...Qh5+ 18.gxh5 Rh4 mate>

Struggled with this when viewing from the White side; Switched sides and EUREKA!

Feb-14-12  Memethecat: CG saved the Q sac for Tuesday. <17...Qh5+ 18gxh5 Rh4#> Not so much a Valentines day massacre as a gentle mugging by Carlson.

That was an entertaining game, man! I wrote a couple of posts on there which are relevant to tactical questions kibitzers brought up - both directly and indirectly.

Thanks for mentioning this game today!

Feb-14-12  johnlspouge: <Once>, I hope they are paying you for this stuff. ROFL.
Feb-14-12  zb2cr: Hi <Once>,

THAT was spectacularly funny.

Took under a minute to see the <Anastasia mate> after 17. ... Qh5+; 18. gxh5, Rh4#.

Feb-14-12  Limpin Kt: Easy puzzle. Almost disappointed that it got solved within first 3seconds :) i bet most of d players solved in 2s. A very deadly knight and a suicide-bomber queen accompanied by a grinning rook wil do d trick- 1...Qh5+!
Feb-14-12  agb2002: Black is a pawn ahead.

White threatens 18.Q(R)xe2.

Pattern recognition quickly finds 17... Qh5+ 18.gxh5 Rh4#.
