Mar-26-16 | | Rama: After reading how dull the QGD has become recently, I got out Alekhine's "My Best Games" for a look at how he played it. My recollection was, "brilliantly." I found this one, which he described as "...one of my two best tournament games." I plugged the score into my contraption and let it analyse. Both sides made many sub-optimal moves. The machine really wanted
Bogo to play ...a5 at several points which looks pretty good for developing his Q-side. I took no notes but I wonder if anyone else thought about the a5-move. |

This isn't one of the games Alekhine had in mind. The two are these: Bogoljubov vs Alekhine, 1922 and Reti vs Alekhine, 1925 |

Mar-26-16 | | Rama: Thanks. I can't stop laughing...Y'know, it didn't seem that brilliant to me...are you left-handed? I am...LOL. |

I found this one, which he described as "...one of my two best tournament games." >> Did you visually look at the game or any of its diagrams? How could you think that Alekhine was writing about this game, which does not appear in that book? |

Mar-27-16 | | Rama: Page 185, game 72, Dover Edition 1985, AAA-Bogo, QGD. The correct game is #73, Bogo-AAA, Dutch Defense. I didn't realize it was a double-round. But what is puzzling? Are there other editions of this book? |

 | | Pawn and Two: In his book, "My Best Games of Chess 1908-1923", Alekhine stated that with his move 33.d5!, White secured a passed pawn, which would shortly cost Black a piece, and the remainder of the game would then be merely a question of technique. In the Hastings 1922 tournament book, also with annotations by Alekhine, he stated that after 33.d5, White will obtain a passed pawn which would eventually cost Black a piece. My Houdini 3 program also prefers the move 33.d5 for White, indicating an advantage for White, but not a winning advantage. My Houdini 3 program indicates 34....g3?? was the losing move for Black: (2.46) (31 ply) 35.f3! Kf6 36.b5 axb5 37.axb5 Ke7. In the Hastings 1922 tournament book, Alekhine stated that instead of 34...g3, Black should have preferred 34...f3, a move which would have freed his rook. My Houdini 3 program indicates 34...f3 was a much better move than 34...g3. However, White does have an advantage after 34...f3: (.78) (33 ply) 34...f3 35.gxf3 Rxf2 36.Ke5 Re2+ 37.Kd6. Houdini 3 indicates Black's best move at move 34, with very good drawing chances for Black was: (.38) (32 ply) 34....Kf6! 35.Nxd5+ Bxd5 36.Kxd5 f3! 37.gxf3 gxf3 38.Rf1 Ke7!; (.35) (33 ply) 39.Kc4 or 39.Kd4, 39....Rh4+. |
