May-23-08  anandrulez: These games speak a lot about Anand's pschological side when he played Kasparov - unlike many other players Anand was never really inferior to Kasparov but his results never stood up .
Jul-08-08  AAAAron: Anand could have captured one of the rooks in the end, why did he resign. He would of had an extra piece. What was Kasparov's compensation???
Jul-08-08  najdorfman: AAAAron:
If 32. Kxb4, then 32...Rxd2 and Black's up two pawns. If instead 32. Rxc2, then 32...Rb3+ 33. Ka2 Re3 discovered check 34. White any move, 34...Rxe1 and Black's two pawns up. I hope that answers your question. When great players resign, there are substantial reasons for it 99.9% of the time.
Jul-25-08  cannibal: I had sort of a deja-vu experience when looking over this game right now. I mean, I definitely played over it before, but just now I realized that this game was one of my first contacts with world class chess ever. I was 10 at that time and had learnt to play quite a while before, but chess was basically a thing between me and my dad (and maybe I knew a couple of master games from old books already). They must have printed the whole game with annotations in some TV guide, with special emphasis on the final combination.

Now that I think of it, my VERY first touch with world class chess was the Kasparov-Short match. Back then they had extensive analysis on TV (Pfleger+Hort) several times during the match, and I specifically remember that great game where Short was chasing Kasparov's king over the board, and how disappointed I was when he only got a draw.

Aaaah, memories.....

Oct-20-08  Marmot PFL: Anand's loss in this game can be partly attributed to the previous game.
Nov-14-08  VaselineTopLove: 30. Nb6 reminds me of Kramnik's 29.Nxd4 from game 5 of the WC match.
Nov-25-08  capatal: One wonders if/when Kasparov would have retired - if Kramnik had given Kasparov a timely rematch. (Their cg.com lifetime score has Kaspy ahead by one win.)
Mar-06-09  dehanne: 12.Kb1! is common today and gives white a very comfortable game, nearly hunting the dragon to extinction although some swashbucklers still mess with 12...a6?! and 12...Re8!?.
May-25-09  Eisenheim: I'm not a big fan of resigning early - it shortcircuits the prospects of brillincies in the end game or a swindlish draw. however, in this game anand wouldve been two pawns down with no counterplay. if he takes the passed b pawn then K routes the G pawn and anand wouldve had to fight 5 connected pawns to three broken teeth. absent a major blunder K wouldve easily won
Jun-27-09  Damianx: This is a Fisher game that Garry knew i.ve seen it Garry played it all the way that Fisher did
Feb-20-10  checkthatout: Why would Anand not play 29. Nxb4 ?
Feb-23-10  Damianx: He wanted to pin/ win a Rook
May-01-10  tivrfoa: 30. Nb6 was a real blunder. (thumb down) :/
Nov-17-10  chesschampion11: Hey everyone, i have made a study today, here it comes:

click for larger view

hite to move and draws in 3 moves. 1.♘c3 ♖g1+ 2.♘b1 h2 3.♗e6!![like fischer] 3...♗xe6? Stalemate!

Nov-17-10  anandrulez: mistreaver: <This a clearly a lost position, I think Anand made a good "move" throwing the towel. It's impossible to save this game.> In his book Kasparov's fighting chess Karoly gives 28 Nxe7 (with the help of fritz) as better for White. And also after 30 Nxe7 he says black is little better

Combinations like this are very simple for Anand's level and 28 Nxe7 looked a solid plus for Anand . Its unbelivable how Anand went for the fork thinking it could be so easy to defeat Kasparov . It looked like Vishy got tricked by Kasparov but nonetheless a simple trick for WC level . Kramniks Nxd4 in Bonn was much more complicated than this and it needs some resources to be seen before hand but this is 2 mover .

Nov-26-11  serenpidity.ejd: The decision to resign was I think premature on the point of view from unrated wood pushers. Anand could have played some more just to show the consequences of 30)....Rxb4. But he already saw what was ahead. What can we do he is a Super Grandmaster!
Nov-26-11  serenpidity.ejd: This pawn - grabbing is a remarkable chess trait of Kasparov. Nobody does it better(?). Anand, albeit, did not see it coming just like the others. Deep calculation by the champ!

1.Bxb8 allows mate in two starting with 1...Rg1+

Fail.

Sep-23-12  govind: it is said that dragon gives black a better end game which led fischer to remark that before the end game there is middle game. With the exchange of queens black is clearly better.I like the clarity with which black has played the dragon.
Sep-23-12  RookFile: Anand might not play 3. d4 today. It's a difference in his style compared to the past.

The greater difference is that today he would be far more likely to play d4 at his first move.

Jul-04-13  Ulhumbrus: The capture 32...Rxc2!! removes the c2 pawn which covers the b3 square.

In this way it transforms the rook on b4 from a target into a weapon, a weapon which becomes able then to threatens the check ...Rb3+.

At the same time the rook which lands on on c2 attacks the rook on d2 and by doing so transforms itaelf from a target into a weapon as well.

In this way the capture 34..Rxc2 creates a double threat.

Although White attacks both rooks he can take only one at a time and the other rook is able then to carry out a winning threat.

Oct-02-14  villageboy: We, a group of good chess players were watching this game live and no one saw Rc2, when Nb6 was on the board. The variation is really world class.
Jan-21-15  SpiritedReposte: Very unique finishing combo. I cannot recall seeing any like it.
