May-08-06  Whitehat1963: This took me a minute or so. Then, finally, I saw Morphy and the Duke and Count.
May-08-06  YouRang: I got it pretty quickly. Funnily, I would have gotten it faster if White didn't have such an intense attack on the f7 pawn -- I spent a few seconds looking there first! Good Monday puzzle.
May-08-06  dakgootje: Just played a game today on my calculator during maths where i played the same mate pattern-combination-thingy-whatever youve got to call it (differant opening ;-).

always nice those monday puzzles ;-)

May-08-06  crptone: This puzzle was way too easy... we should have guessed from the position before 16) Bb5+!
May-08-06  BishopofBlunder: I tend to lose many games in this manner. I often neglect to safeguard the king before forming an attack.

Due to this, and being a big fan of the opera house game, I found the combination quite easily.

May-08-06  kevin86: A nice Reti-Tartokower clone! The twist is the veiled attack on d8 from white's bishop. A good Monday puz
May-08-06  kevin86: I bet poor Amos couldn't get the pipe out of his pocket this time!
May-08-06  mago de riga: Tipical monday queen´s sacrifice
May-08-06  old coot: I'm not a student of chess history, could someone direct me to the opera house game?
May-08-06  FICSwoodpusher: Morphy vs Duke Karl / Count Isouard, 1858
May-08-06  jamesmaskell: The puzzles are random games, therefore Unzicker will not appear everytime. I dont follow Unzickers puzzles though I know he was a great player. Have a look at Unzicker's games and comment on them. I'd like to see what you think of them.

  LIFE Master AJ: Nice game.
(I have the new HUGE book on Burn ... is this game from that volume???)
May-08-06  Paintbucket: That was an easy one. First thing I saw.

Sneaky: Here's the Reti game that people keep mentioning -- Reti vs Tartakower, 1910
May-08-06  schnarre: Even I saw this one...
May-08-06  old coot: Thanks, FICSwoodpusher.
May-08-06  Dudley: They should hve started this one with the 16th (Bb5!) move instead of the 17th, but that might make it a Tuesday or Wednesday puzzle.
May-08-06  MaxxLange: <Dudley>That's what I was just thinking! That's the clearance shot for the x-ray + d-file mating battery.

It's possible that the game sides are wrong in the database. Black goes down very much like the amateur losers in the "consultation games" they played in the old days, and I just don't see Burn playing for stuff like ...Bxf2

May-08-06  jperr75108: An easy problem, it seems like the easier problems always have this idea in them
May-08-06  ChessPraxis: I recently played an internet game that COULD and SHOULD have ended with this mate but I missed it because I was targeting the White Queen rather than the White King. I saw that I could win major material and that was good enough for me! Fortunately, my opponent made the same kind of error, only worse, and I was able to checkmate him anyway - only in a more spectacular fashion - a Boden's mate in the middle of the board with only a pair of pawns exchanged. (Of course the shine comes off because of the missed forced mate the move before. I should have played 8. ... Bb4+ and 9. ... Re1#.)

1. e4 e6 2. Nf3 d5 3. exd5 exd5 4. Nd4 Nf6 5. Qe2+ Be7 6. d3 O-O 7. Bg5 Re8 8. Qf3 Bg4 9. Qf4 Bb4# 0-1

Mar-19-23  stone free or die: Charles Hugh Sherrard, who is likely part of the white team here, has quite a history - for an amateur.

MissScarlett: <The Liverpool Chess Club has quite a history>

True, but this wasn't played in Liverpool, nor in 1897.

Mar-19-23  stone free or die: Can't we get his photo on his player page (see the cpl link there)?
