Nov-07-22  Mayankk: Thinking its a Monday puzzle, I wanted to initially sac Rook via 30 ... Rxe3 but I struggled to find a continuation justifying this sac, since White can take via fxe3 instead of Kxe3 and then there are no easy checks for Black.

I was also unable to bring the Bishop into play while moving the f4 Knight meant White King could sneak out via the crucial e2 square.

After all the above confusion, I could only think of 30 .... Qh6 as a potential strong move - idea being to mate via Qh2 and Qg2# unless White takes the offered Knight via 31 gxf4 after which the Queen can start harassing it. However I didn't know if 31 ... Qxf4# had any merits and I certainly didn't know all the possible defences White could muster.

Nov-07-22  Philidor Attack: How come these puzzles are wrong half the time? This is not "very easy".

  whittaker: Great puzzle, though certainly not easy. I looked at 30 ... Qh6 31. gxf4 but missed the strong follow-up 31 ... Rd2!

Amazingly, "crafty" also missed it, assuming Black would recapture with 31 ... exf4 when the evaluation is roughly -0.9. Only when I forced it to play 31 ... Rd2 did it see a clear win for Black with an eval of about -5.

Nov-07-22  Chessius the Messius: Can't say I scored any points today.
Nov-07-22  jrredfield: I think they got Sunday and Monday mixed up. This was far more difficult for me than yesterday's POTD. I looked at 30 ... Rxe3+ but quickly saw that it would fall flat. I tried to make something work with the Knight but no dice. I never considered the text move. Oh well, maybe easy Tuesday will be more to my liking.
Nov-07-22  thegoodanarchist: Woke up to find it's Saturday in chess puzzle land.
Dec-19-22  Brenin: Is this a Monday POTD? This position looked familiar, so I immediately thought of 30 ... Qh6. I didn't get the puzzle back in November, and I'm not sure that I completely understand it now.
Dec-19-22  jrredfield: Recycled and no easier than the last time. Not sure what's going on here.
Dec-19-22  mel gibson: I failed today.
I notice that today's puzzle has even been posted before on a Saturday and other days.

score for Black +5.91 depth 43.

Dec-19-22  Mayankk: Keeping aside the mystery on why chessgames thinks this is 'very easy', 32... exf4 is a beautiful move in a very interesting game.

Black wilfully allows his Queen to be pinned against his King, calculating that he can chalk an e5-f4-e3-e2-e1 pawn promotion sequence before White can make his extra Queen count.

Maybe this puzzle can start on move 32 ... Black to play. Although that still won't qualify as easy in my books.

Dec-19-22  King.Arthur.Brazil: I was in doubt about this move 30...♕h6 or 30...b6, although the first seemed better. White has lost a piece, but as capturing it back with 31. gxf4 ♖d2 the ♔ situation became very risky. For example, 32. ♖g1 ♕h3+ 33. ♖g3 ♕h1+ 36. ♖g2 exf4 or 34. ♘g2 exf4. Another possibility was 32. ♘f1 ♕xf4+ 33. ♔g2 ♕xf2+ 34. ♔h1 ♕g2#. Therefore, 31...♖d2 avoid the ♘ capturing. The only move to continue without check-mate seems to be: 31. ♕xb7 because now 31...♖d2 has the answer 32. ♕xc7. In this line, 32...♗d6 32. ♕f7. The position is unclear yet. The final combination (33.♖xf2+) is very unexpected and pretty surely.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Have never encountered an impossible Monday puzzle before. Feels more Sunday-ish.

That said, this must rank among Dzindzichashvili's greatest games.

Dionysius1: I've had years of fun from the POTD but it's clear to me the feature is broken. Too many times over the last year it's been clear the assessment of the difficulty has been wrong - this is just the most recent one.

Come on chessgames.com - it's your flagship and if it sinks, why should newbies become regulars and frequenters?

Dec-19-22  Cibator: A Monday puzzle-setting*, rather than a Monday-puzzle setting.

* People sometimes talk about "Monday cars" - ones made on that day, when workers may still be a bit woozy after the week-end's excesses, hence likelier to contain faults. ("Friday cars", made when everyone's about ready to drop, are said to have similar problems.)

perfidious: Clever finish by Dzin, but in terms of difficulty, far from Monday POTD material, under the guise of which this has twice been submitted.
Dec-19-22  hoodrobin: Very Easy for Dzindzichashvili.

Teyss: Lobron must have had four shocks in this game.

After 33.Rh1 he was sure to capture the Queen. First shock: 33...Rxf2+! deflection sac.

Second: 34...fxe3+! What, you don't take my Rook on h1? Now this allows me to protect it again and reinstate the pin with 35.Kg2.

Third: 35...Qxh1+!! Oh <now> you take it??

Four: 36...e2! That's what it was all about, no deflection or winning a Knight, just a simplification.

The pun: indeed a sketch from the immortal Monty Python. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_... But why does it apply here? Eric Lobron was no "pet" i.e. client of Roman Dzindzichashvili with a score of +1 -1 =1.

Maybe he played fishy moves? Is there a link between "Roman" and the fact the sketch mentions Marcel Proust? That would be far-fetched, not at all CG style.

HeMateMe: Roman has always been one of those colorful people who make chess fun. I remember seeing him sleeping on a bench in WSP early one afternoon. I told my friend

"See that guy on the bench? He's one of the world's best chess players!"

"The bum?

He's not a bum, he just sometimes sleeps on the benches when tired."

At that point dzindzi's friend woke him up and they walked off. Roman noticed I was gesturing to him, smiled. This was the early '80s.

Terrific game
