Jun-06-07  Autoreparaturwerkbau: Oh well. I would never have guessed the latest move. Even after seeing it i don't understand it. Maybe it's just not the right day. :)
Jun-06-07  Autoreparaturwerkbau: (me again, a minute later) Aaah, i see - finally. After forced 55...Kxd8, 56. Rd7+ forks both king and poor bishop. Lovely puzzle for me, indeed.
May-22-08  diabloprancer: If black takes the d-pawn on move 52, then 53.Rh8+ Kc7 54.Rc8#
Dec-08-16  edubueno: 40...B x f5 or 41... B x f5
Apr-21-18  ModRQC: The mistake if 52...Rxd6?? 53.Rh8+ Kc7 (or ...Ka7) 54.Rc8# (or Ra8#) was mentioned by Pachman in Modern Chess Strategy; however it is not at all a forced mate on account of 53...Rd8 It still loses just as much, but the Black King can run.

Wouldn't work. White can put the a-pawn on a4, maybe the b-pawn on b3, and then maneuver the rook around the black rook (Rh7 or Rh8, depending on where the black rook is, then the black rook has to abandon the f-file or the black K has to let the white king onto b5 and the b6 falls) to capture the f-pawn, very likely with check, and black position collapses.

Aug-25-21  MatrixManNe0: Ludek Pachman in Complete Chess Strategy, vol. 1, gives two more moves after the score posted here:

55... Kxd8 56. Rd7+ 1-0. Winning the Bd1, of course.

keypusher: Was pointed to this game by <Olavi> (FIDE World Cup (2023) (kibitz #272)). Really impressed that Lilienthal was able to win this ending.

perfidious: Outstanding display of technical virtuosity in this must-win game, with Lilienthal, along with Smyslov, trailing Bondarevsky by a full point entering this final round.
