Jun-28-17  thegoldenband: Heh, nice pun. I found myself thinking of Salov the other day for the first time in ages, wondering what he'd been up to -- and promptly fell down a rabbit hole discovering the answer to that question...

An Englishman: Good Evening: Rather an odd variation of the Slav, and a good imitation of Smyslov by Salov--better pawn structure, 2 B vs. B & N, well managed endgame. Just the sort of game Black usually played.

ajk68: The conclusion is 57...Kd6 58. Qf6+, and the queens are exchanged. White then promotes the h pawn.
Jun-28-17  sensex: You bet thegoldenband..I experienced the same a few days earlier...
Jun-28-17  eykca: woah... ty <tgb and sensex> for an an... interesting read...
Jun-28-17  Strelets: <thegoldenband> Valery Borisovich has been a busy man.
Jun-28-17  ChessHigherCat: If 11....dxc3 12. exf7+ Kxf7 13. Bxc4+ Ke7 (if Ke6 Bf4+) 14. Qe2+ Kd7 15. Qe6+ Kf7 16. Bf4+ and the black king is poised for a hare-lowering plunge into the rabbit hole.
Jun-28-17  nalinw: One of the better puns ...
Jun-28-17  Howard: So, exactly what is Salov doing nowadays ? I've wondered about that myself.

He was in the world's top-10 from about 1988-1994, roughly.

  Ron: After 20. Rab1 Black correctly refuses to take 20. ... Qa4 for then play could go: 21. Bc4 Nd5 22. Bh6 Bd6 23. Ra1 Nxc3 24. Qd3 Qb4 25. Qd4 Bf8 26. Bxf8 Qxf8 27. Qxc3 Qg7

Valery Salov thinks that the games of the Kasparov - Anand World Championship Match (1995) were a qabbalistic ritual designed to focus energy on the World Trade Centre and leading to its collapse.

Jun-29-17  saturn2: Huebner vs Smyslov, 1983 In this game the sacrifice introdiced by Smslov and prepared by his helper was seen first as far as I know. Huebner gave a analysis whether white can keep the knight by 11 Ne4. But because of the threats ..Qh4+ and ..Bb4+(Bd2 c3!) it is not good. You can say that again!

GrahamClayton: 48. Re7+! - a beautiful finish to a wonderful game. Smyslov's rook is no match for Salov's bishop plus connected passed pawns.
