Dec-10-05  ughaibu: I guess it's an inevitable consequence of the enormous increase in prize money. It's a pity, as the reality that chess is in fact a game seems to have been lost sight of.

perfidious: <Jim Bartle> Can't say where I recall seeing this, but Najdorf was reportedly cured of his 'how am I doing?' habit in the following way: At one of the Wijk aan Zee events, he asked a journalist about his position in his usual manner, whereupon the journalist, who knew nothing about chess, replied, 'you're sunk without a bubble'.

I was LMAO the first time I read that gem.

<Eric> This game was published in Chess Life by (I think) Andy Soltis.

Jan-24-06  whatthefat: Rather fitting that when I do the search for games similar to this one I am told:

<Sorry, there are no games similar to this one in the database.>

Jan-24-06  Steppenwolf: Fun game to look at. And congrats to Life Master AJ for his excellent anecdote.
Jan-24-06  Whitehat1963: The position after 20...Qe5 is simply stunning. Truly a position for the ages!
Jan-27-06  Steppenwolf: Whitehat, true, the two queens are facing each other, unprotected, yet cannot be taken, because of instant mate threats.
Jan-27-06  RookFile: I played Tal in a simul when he came to Boston as part of touring America. Got a decent position as black in a Ruy Lopez, but he ground me down with nice endgame technique. Just a little reminder that a super GM is excellent in all aspects of the game.
Jan-28-06  Steppenwolf: Well, to be honest RookFile, maybe you don't need to be "excellent in all aspects of the game" to beat you in a simul, don't you think?
Jan-31-06  LluviaSean: what's a simul mean???
Apr-30-06  Confuse: is 25 rd8 mate? i dont see why not...

i know it was a simul but im wondering if this is right? thanks.

Apr-30-06  Magician of Riga: 25 Rd8 would be mate, unfortunately the white king is in check.
May-03-06  Icon: h4 !! it's brilliant move, any other mortal would have lost his/her cool in that kind of position. Rd1 !! Tal's heart pumps ice not blood..My God

chancho: According To Yasser Seirawan's book: "Winning Chess Tactics", this game was one of twenty or forty, from a simultaneous display that Tal played in Los Angeles.
May-03-06  Confuse: <Magician of Riga>

Thanks T_T I need to pay more attention :D

TheAlchemist: After the game, Miller explained his loss:

"Now, I don't want to get off on a rant here, but the position after 22.Rd1 was harder to understand than Bob Dylan reading Finnegans Wake in a wind tunnel. Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong."

May-09-06  TylerD: Aljechin and Kasparov are the only players that can match Tal when it comes to tactics. As someone said below: Tal would have kicked Morphy´s butt.

Would probably not have kicked Alechin´s though... and we know he did not kick Kasparov´s...

May-09-06  aw1988: This is some skewed logic.
May-09-06  RookFile: I think black had the better postion after the 12th move.
May-09-06  question marks: <Tal would have kicked Morphy´s butt.> That statement is totally anachronistic. Wouldn't it be a little unfair to pit Morphy up against a guy who studied Morphy's games?
May-09-06  TylerD: Well, who said it was "fair"?
May-09-06  RookFile: Morphy vs. Tal would be interesting, because each guy would be offering sacrifices to the other for the sake of time.
Jun-19-06  notyetagm: <Icon: h4 !! it's brilliant move, any other mortal would have lost his/her cool in that kind of position. Rd1 !! Tal's heart pumps ice not blood..My God>

And this was a simul! 21 h4!! is ingenius.

Jun-19-06  notyetagm: 21 h4!!, 22 ♖d1!! my god what a tactical genius Tal was.
Jul-05-06  MrMelad: <RookFile: Morphy vs. Tal would be interesting, because each guy would be offering sacrifices to the other for the sake of time.> Yhea, I thought of it myself some time ago. Both will give all material but no one will take it. They will keep sacrificing everything until one will break or one will mate with all the pieces on the board...
