chessgames.com: We were considering it, but there might be a flaw. Doesn't the obvious 11...Qh5 also win?
Jun-12-04  acirce: <Doesn't the obvious 11...Qh5 also win?> Is that so clear after 12. Rf4 ? White is obviously in trouble, but 11...Rh1+ is a clear and immediate win.

chessgames.com: Oh, I think you're right. Thanks, acirce.
Feb-01-05  Shadow 812: Move 10 fxg4?? was too greedy and it cost White the game!! A more spirited defence would have been
10. Kg1 Nxe3
11. Qa4 (or Qb3)Nxf1
12. Nxf1
With two pieces for the rook and the attack running out of steam, White can avoid a quick knockout and may actually stand better!!
Aug-24-05  srini: good opennig.wonderful scarifices
Mar-02-06  AlexanderMorphy: why the hell isn't this puzzle of the day?!?!?!
Jan-02-07  Silverstrike: <Shadow 812> I think that after 10.Kg1 Diemer's point was 10...Qh4, and after 11.fxg4 (which looks forced), 11...hxg4 12.Rf4 transposes to the line that <acirce> speaks of. As <acirce> says, though there doesn't seem to be an immediate win, white is in alot of trouble.
Jan-02-07  Towershield: 12.Kf2 Qh4+ 13.g3 Qh2+ 14.Ke1 Qxg3#.
Apr-30-07  mannetje: After 9.Bxh7+! Kxh7 10.Ng5+ Black should have played 10...Kg8. But after 11.Qh5 fxg5 12.hxg5 white is still winning. e.g. 12...Tf5 13.g4! <or 13.f4 Nf8 14.g4 > 13..Rxg5 14.Bxg5 Bxg5 15.f4 Be7 16.g5 Nf8 17.g6 Nxg6 18.Qxg6 Bh4+ 19.Ke2 and black is lost.

The problem is that 9.Ng5!!! is even better: 9...Qe8 <The only move that doesn't run into a mate> Now white has many ways to win. The simplest is 10.Bxh7+ Kh8 11.Qc2`. Black is defenceless.

Apr-30-07  mannetje: I think I made a mistake. In my previous post I assumed the game went 1.e4 Nf6 2.d3 d5 3.e5 Nfd7 4.d4, so I reversed the collours. Sorry!
Dec-07-08  Ladolcevita: mate like this!!
May-15-09  blacksburg: holy moly this game is <bananas>
May-15-09  blacksburg: i can't stop playing over this game for some reason...it's just so...crunchy.
May-15-09  blacksburg: this is the kind of game that makes me think <sure, i could be good at chess, this looks easy>. but it never works out like that, does it? :(
Jan-08-11  Dymdez: One of the greatest games ever played, sorry. Somewhere, Morphy is smiling lol.

  FSR: Diemer's 4...Bd6 is awfully subtle. Generator-Rhine, Internet blitz game 2011, continued instead 4...e3!? 5.fxe3 Bd6 6.Nf3 Nf6 7.Bd2? Ng4 8.Na3? Nxh2! 9.Nxh2?? Bg3#.
Nov-28-11  IRONCASTLEVINAY: this man never played seriously

FSR: I had another subtle Internet game earlier this year that went 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5 (I'd never played this, figured I'd give it a shot) 3.Nf3?! e4 4.Nfd2 e3!? 5.fxe3 Bd6!? ("setting 'em up long," as Mario Spinosa liked to say) 6.c5?? Qh4+ 0-1

Feb-11-13  sfm: People not playing 2.dxe should have their school money back.
Aug-14-13  actinia: 2. Nf3 is valid. If black continues ... e4, white needs to follow up with French-type play with an early c4 though.
Mar-27-20  sea7kenp: When in Doubt, Push a Pawn, and then Mate a King.
