I wouldn't call 2... Ne7 with 3... f5 normal.

Sep-17-21  Messiah: <sneaky pete> You can use the correction slip for this. However, this is just a naming convention catastrophe: if there is no publicly accepted name for an opening, then it can be a 'normal' variation of an opening, like in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norma....

fredthebear: Jeepers <Messiah>, who's gonna wanna be "normal" after reading that link? You're into some heavy stuff there.

Right or wrong, the French Defense: Normal Variation (C00) is given when Black refrains from playing 2...d5. Of course, 2...d5 IS normally played, so the C00 name for different Black second moves should have been "Abnormal."

Here are the 10 games in the database that started 1.e4/d4 e6 2.d4/e4 Ne7?! https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che...

Obviously, 3.Nc3 f5 transposes this into a Dutch Defense. This is the only game in the database that begins this way.

fredthebear: Notice all the ? designations for both colors by Stockfish in the notes above. The computer dislikes this entire game.

I don't recall seeing an "underpromotion to three rooks mate" before (a.k.a. Lawnmower, Rook Roller, and Corridor Mate). The mathematics instructor Anderssen did not want a "normal" finish, either.

I'm an extremely, extremely, extremely bad chess player, however, both of math and chess are sufficiently beautiful never to get spoiled by my constant patzing.

That's what I asked myself looking at this game again. After the "normal" 49... Rb7+ 50.Kc1 ... what can black do?
