Dec-20-13		Phony Benoni: By coincidence, I just entered a Latvian Gambit section on GameKnot without realizing it was a thematic. Here's the final position of my first win: click for larger view Note that to reach this position Black's last move had to have been <...Re7-e4#>. Just don't ask me how the rook got to e7. It must have seemed like a good idea at the time.

Dec-21-13		Domdaniel: I never open 1.e4, yet I wound up playing against a Latvian Gambit in a tournament game. It started 1.Nf3 f5 2.e4 e5 ... a sort of Reti-Dutch-Lisitsyn-Latvian transposition dance. The only 'theory' I could remember was that Nimzowitsch had said something like "No matter if the whole world plays Knight there, I play Knight here" ... but I couldn't remember where here and there were. In practice, I avoided both the Knight moves that Nimzo referred to, and came up with a third maneuver. And I still won.

Dec-21-13		MarkFinan: I can imagine players of my ability, and a lot better as this game shows, getting into serious trouble early on in this opening, Dom. I am an e4 player but I've never come across this particular opening before. Honestly mate, I've learned so much about chess this year (let's just forget the "Capablanca game" haha) because I've had so much time on my hands, and I regularly go through obscure games without commenting, not because I feel under qualified to because there are people here who know far less about chess than me, although they're obviously people here who know far more, but for no other reason than I've become lazy this year! I really do feel sharp chesswise lately Dom, but if it wasn't for this site and people like you and Shams, (I read your replies, and I guess I should reply thanking you for your answers!) and even AJ, I'd still be the bloke who used to be good as a kid but couldn't beat his granny nowadays! I'm not trying to be big headed in any way whatsoever, I'm just saying what I believe are facts... After this year in particular I've learnt so much that I feel confident against anybody under say a 1900 rating. I really love chess, and it's the biggest regret of my life I stopped playing for all those years. And as I'm sure you can imagine, I've got a lot of regrets in my life, lol. ✌

Dec-23-13		MarkFinan: As someone has already noted, this game really Is worth going through twice. It's hard to say where white started going wrong because he never looks right, but looking without the benefit of an engine castling doesn't look too clever.

Feb-09-14		GrahamClayton: <luzhin>I fail to see the refutation of the obvious 17.♔xh2 <luzhin>, 17. ♔xh2 ♕h4+ 18. ♔g1 ♘g4, and White will have to give up his Queen for the knight in order to stop the threatened checkmate.

Sep-23-17		Christoforus Polacco: I try to play Latvian in tournaments (even against 2000 ELO players - against Kasparov also I will play it :))))) and is still better & better :) A lot of fun. And adrenaline.
