Gypsy: Well, sometimes a game just breaks wrong. And occasional loss is a part of taking risks, no need to rag on a great player.

It does seem that Volokitin is a very unplesant oponent for Carlsen.

Jul-28-06  Major Dude: Wow, this was a reall fast game. Looks like white fell apart fast and decisively.
Jul-28-06  micahtuhy: Awesome, I called h5 and was right! It would have been h5 Qf3 Rd3 Rxd3 g4 rg2+ qxr bxq kxb leaving Carlsen with no pieces and a pawn disadvantage and an easy win for V

chessgames.com: Don't touch that dial -- we're switching over to one of the games from the Ladies' section in just a moment.
Jul-28-06  Atking: Offield: Oh, leave Aronian out of this. Sure he's playing brilliantly. And Carlsen is acting like a wobbly teenager - but he's also on an upward trajectory that hasn't been seen since Fischer and Kasparov. Anything could happen. It'll be good to actually have candidates matches again, is all.> I'm quite agree with this.
Jul-28-06  micahtuhy: I think Carlsen, if he keeps getting better, surely can be one of the greats, but I doubt he will be good enough in a few months to be able to beat Aronian in the candidates matches, I think carlsen's time to seriously contend for the World title won't be until after he gets past his teenage years. We won't see anymore Ruslan Ponomariovs. (not that his being the FIDE champion at 18 from winning a knockout tourney was very legit anyway) Pnomariov winning the WC that young was a fluke, and I don't see Carlsen being good enough to make it to the WC tournament at leasxt until the next cycle.
Jul-28-06  spirit: yeah! waiting!
Jul-28-06  handro1104: What's wrong with Qc8+?
Jul-28-06  notyetagm: Volokitin <OWNS> Magnus, 3-0 now.

Gypsy: <handro1104: What's wrong with Qc8+?> Kh7 and White has nothing but a resignation.
Jul-28-06  Manequinho: The psychological aspect played a big hole. Carlsen can't beat Volokitin (just like Brasil can't beat France in football...).

I should have bet more on Volokitin...

Jul-28-06  notyetagm: This will shut up the arrogant Magnus supporters for a while.
Jul-28-06  sitzkrieg: How you gonna stop Rc1 after Kh7?
Jul-28-06  sitzkrieg: Make that Rd1 <handro>
Jul-28-06  notyetagm: Better than Fischer at his age? Give me a break! Have a look at D Byrne vs Fischer, 1956, which Fischer played when he was 13(!!).
Jul-28-06  magerk: Seems wierd how everyone sings his praises when he beats Moro, but as soon as he has a bad game, people start to thrash him. No matter what rating you are, consistency can be a problem, especially the way magnus plays.
Jul-28-06  independentthinker: No I mean:

23 Rf5 Bb7
24 Kf2 QG2+
25 Ke1 Qh1+

With perpetual check and the threat of white's Rh7

What do you think Ohio?

Jul-28-06  Mendrys: I think it started to go downhill for Carlsen after the very natural looking move 15. Nd4. I don't know if this is theory or not but after the exchange white has an impressive looking but fragile pawn center. I wonder if he underestimated 16...Ba6 or overestimated his kingside attacking chances.
Jul-28-06  notyetagm: <Gypsy: ... It does seem that Volokitin is a very unplesant oponent for Carlsen.>

Carlsen likes to attack the enemy king with White. This is the second Volokitin Black game I have seen against Carlsen in which Magnus' attack went nowhere and Volokitin made him look like an amateur.

Jul-28-06  acirce: <but as soon as he has a bad game, people start to thrash him.>

You bet. Sooner or later it's inevitable he has a couple of bad tournaments, and then equally inevitably we're going to hear "see, he's not as good as everybody thinks" and that he's "overhyped" again.

Truth is he is an incredible talent who gets better and better and is bound to become a top player, perhaps even no.1 if everything goes right, but that on his way there he will face quite a few setbacks.

Jul-28-06  s4life: <spirit: or maybe carlsen is tired> or perhaps Volikitin played better? and that's all there is to it?
Jul-28-06  notyetagm: <Orkhan: Awwww, baby lost :))))))>

LOL

Jul-28-06  KingG: <notyetagm> I'm not as harsh on Carlsen as you, but i have to agree that the style Carlsen has that excites his fans so much might not work out too well against the very top players. We'll see how he does in Corus, but i expect him to play a more solid style if he wants to do well.

People criticise Karjakin for being 'boring', especially in comparison to Carlsen, but it needs to be realised that he has been playing the likes of Kramnik and Anand since he was 14. Carlsen has only played players of that class in rapid and blitz. Those types of players don't let you get away with many inaccuracies.

Jul-28-06  notyetagm: <KingG: <notyetagm> I'm not as harsh on Carlsen as you, but i have to agree that the style Carlsen has that excites his fans so much might not work out too well against the very top players.>

Oh, I am not harsh on Magnus at all. He is a great talent, a super talent, who is clearly destined for chess greatness.

It is his arrogant fans that I do not like.
