Sep-19-06  jamesmaskell: Hmmm, brings to mind a famous game... :)
Sep-19-06  technical draw: This game wasn't so EZ for Adams.
Sep-19-06  ganstaman: This looks a lot like a French Defense to me. I don't even see the similarities to the diagram on the Ruy Lopez, Old Steinitz Defense (C62) page:

Has taking the two rooks like this ever worked out? Ever?

Sep-19-06  syracrophy: They finally put the game I've uploaded. Thanks, <chessgames.com> :-)

<technical draw> Yes, it was Edwin Ziegler Adams. Another of the "blitz" games that Torre played against his master. It appeared in the book that I have "Life and Games of Carlos Torre" by Gabriel Velasco

Dec-15-06  sanyas: If 20... ♕xf3+ 21 ♔xf3 hxg6 then 22 ♗c6 ♖b8 23 ♕d6+.
Feb-06-07  nimzo knight: y not 20. Ne5. ?
Feb-06-07  Gregor Samsa Mendel: <nimzo knight> 20 Ne5 Qe4+

sleepyirv: gantsman: <Has taking the two rooks like this ever worked out? Ever?> After making a brief study on the matter; no. Unless you want to count this game A Redolfi vs Eliskases, 1957
Nov-29-07  Cibator: Well Ganstaman, Geller took 'em both in the following game, and scraped a draw ....

Geller vs Golombek, 1952

.... and Golombek would have lost if he'd done the same!!

Mar-02-08  mindkontrolle: thank you

chancho: 18...Kf8 allows a mate in one, and 18...Ke7 is a mate in three. 20.g6, a multipurpose move. (Threatening mate on f7 and clearing the g5 square for his Knight) 20.Ne5 is no good because of 20...Qe5+.
Jul-25-10  tentsewang: Paul Morphy, Rudolf Charousek, Carlos Torre Repetto...the tragedy of the fallen king.

OBIT: <ganstaman>Actually, no, taking both rooks does not always lose. Seirawan's book "Take My Rooks" can be used to compile data. In this book, there are 136 double rook sacs, of which the player taking both rooks loses 135 and the 136th is drawn. (By the way, the draw is Geller/Golombek, mentioned by <Cibator>.) So, the rook grabber's record is 1/2-135 1/2, for a winning percentage of 0.37%.

This might be the best example of it working out: Nunn vs I A Nataf, 1999
