May-29-18  Mayankk: I think it should have been 25, White to move. Eliminate the defending knight first and then sac our Rook.

With the Black knight already eliminated, the Rook sac is probably at an easy Monday level.

May-29-18  agb2002: White has a bishop and a knight for the bishop pair.

Black threatens fxg5, fxe5 and Rg7.

The only shield of the black king is the bishop on h7. Therefore, 26.Rxh7+ Kxh7 27.Qh4+ Kg7 28.Qh6#.

May-29-18  stacase: <Penguincw: Some more comments: these Olympiad games do make for easy puzzles. White's rating is 1964, black's rating is 1438. Wow!>

I'm that 1400 rated player and going up against a 1900 rating is a certain loss for me. The final position is easy to see. What led up to that final Rook for Bishop sacrifice is not so easy.

May-29-18  bachiller: After 27. .. Kg7, white might play 28. Bxf6+, Kf8, 29. Bxe7, Qxe7, 30. Rxg8+ Kxg8, 31. Qxe7

Much funnier than the prosaic mate 28. Qh6.

May-29-18  Cheapo by the Dozen: This is a holiday week with, in effect, two Mondays.
May-29-18  schachfuchs: Hm, not a game to remember....
May-29-18  glad121: 23 ...g6 could have saved the game for black
May-29-18  malt: Has to be
26.R:h7+ K:h7 27.Qh4+ Kg7 28.Qh6#

Richard Taylor: Very good. White was in a hurry to win that one!

Richard Taylor: Black needed to play a bit more carefully and White's attack would have fizzled...or he would at least be equal. He overestimated White's abilities and plans I think...

Such is chess...and life...

May-29-18  Lambda: <These Monday and Tuesday puzzles are supposed to be for beginners>

That's not really true. A puzzle for beginners might look something like (white to move)

You've then got another level of stuff which would be beyond beginners but easier than Mondays, like (for either side)

  takchess: Happy Tuesday.
May-29-18  zb2cr: <<saturn2>: With 28 Bf6+ it is mate in 5 from Rxh7 on.>

What a luxurious choice to have--between a mate in 5 and a mate in 3.

May-29-18  cocker: Sorry Mr Potter, but 23 … a4 doesn't look too clever (it's the sort of move I might play).

gawain: Another one with the heavy artillery pointed at the Black king. But this time the doubled major pieces are not relevant! The rook on g1 is a mere bystander.
May-29-18  landshark: A Monday-ish Tuesday puzzle I think.
May-29-18  Once: I think we can do a little better.

To be sure, white mates quickly with 27. Qh4+ Kg7 28. Qh6#

But that feels a little ... obvious. For a little more spice we could take a slightly longer route.

27. Qh4+ Kg7 28. Bh6+ Kh7/ Kh8 29. Bf8#

click for larger view

I know, I know, I know, it's one move longer so it's not as "correct" as the shorter mate. But there is something unspeakably satisfying about giving mate whilst parking your bishop on your enemy bishop home square.

29. Bg7# also works but doesn't have so much of the giggle factor.

May-29-18  Pchief: list of mates after 27...Kg7:

28.Qh6#
28.Bh6+ Kh7/Kh8 29.Bf8/Bg7#
28.Bxf6+ Kf8 29.Qh6+ Rg7 30.Qxg7#
28.Bxf6+ Kf8 29.Qh6+ Rg7 30.Qh8+ Rg8 31.Rxg8#

May-29-18  morfishine: <Once> or 27.Qh4+ Kg7 <28.Bxf6+> 28...Kf8 29.Qh6+ Rg7 30.Qxg7#

I agree.

May-29-18  Once: <morfishine> I like it! Then there's this one ...

27. Qh4+ Kg7 28. Bxf6+ Kf8 29. Qh6+ Rg7 30. Bxg7+ Kg8 31. Bf6#

It's good to give the rook on g1 something to do.

May-29-18  morfishine: <Once> When a rat is cornered, there's plenty of ways to finish him off
May-29-18  patzer2: Black's 22...Rg8, allowing today's three move mate beginning with 22. Rxh7+, made it easy for White.

However, Black was busted no matter what 22nd move he made. For example, if 22...c5, it's mate-in-seven after 23. Bxf6 (Stockfish 9 analysis of move 23.?).
