Oct-25-24 | | Allderdice83: Huh? Black to play and lose? Did someone get the wrong game? |
|
Oct-25-24 | | bobbo7458: I think it's a fair problem. Black has 4 legal moves, all of which need to be examined, and only one of which maintains a fairly strong advantage. What I don't get is why Black resigned in the final position. Surely there is still some play left. |

Oct-25-24 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: The king didn' t think much: 28...Kf7 29. Qxd7 Qxe7 30. Bxe6+ Kf8... and what is the problem? The other line 28...Kf7 29. Nxc8 Bxc8? 30. Qxb8 Nxd1 31. Bxd1 Qd8 32. Bf3 Qd7. Or 28...Kf7 29. Nxc8 Qxd6 30. Nxd6+ Ke7 31. Rd3 Nb5 32. Nxb5 Bxb5 33. Rd1 and W has 1 extra ♙ only. |

Stockfish 17 chooses a different ply & says:
28. .. Kh8
(28. .. Kg7 (1. ... Kg7 2.Nxc8 Qxd6 3.Rxd6 Bxc8 4.Rd8 Kf7 5.g4 Nb5 6.h4 h6 7.Rh8 Nxa3 8.h5 b5 9.Rh7+ Kg8
10.Rxh6 Kg7 11.Rg6+ Kf7 12.Rh6 Bb7 13.Rh7+ Kg8 14.Rh6 Kg7 ) +1.56/48 345) score for Black +1.56 depth 48.
if I force SF to follow the game ply:
28. Ne7+ Kh8
29. Nxc8
(29. Nxc8 (1.Nxc8 Qxc8 2.Qe7 Nxd1 3.Qxf6+ Kg8 4.Qg5+ Kf7 5.Qh5+ Kg7 6.Qg5+
Kf7) 0.00/81 104)
score = 0.00 _ it's a draw. |

Oct-25-24 | | Cecco: Of the 4 legal moves mentioned by <bobbo7458>, 28. ... Qxe7 loses; 28. ... Kf7 has the defect that, after 29. Nxc8 Qxd6, the knight recaptures with check; 28. ... Kh8, played in the game, has the defect that, after 29. Nxc8 Qxd6 30. Rxd6 Bxc8, the rook moves to d8 with check. 28. ... Kg7 is the move with the least defects, but I have some doubts that Black can win. |

 | | scormus: <mel gibson: I couldn't see anything much> Neither could I, at least not anything convincing.
28 ... Kh8 looked the natural move, but I thought unlikely to be winning.
Uncomfortable though the K might be on the same diagonal as W's Bb3, I felt it was had to be the move given the puzzle scenario and 0-1 result. After ... Kh8 29 Nxc8, I was expecting ... Qxc8 and not ... Qxd6 which SF rates as giving a modest edge to W. However, W managed to mess up the ending. Thanks for the SF analysis, I can feel OK about today. |

 | | scormus: <0-1 result> Oops, my chesslexia struck again. It was B who messed up (35 ... Bc4? instead of ... Bc6) but I don't think it was resignable |
|
Oct-25-24 | | jimx: Crafty has black at a healthy -1.90 after 1... Kg7 2. Nxc8 -1.68/19 10 Qxd6 3. Rxd6 -1.64/23 5 Bxc8 4. Rd8
-1.64/22 6 Kf7 5. Rh8 -1.59/23 0.3 h6 6. Rxh6 -1.71/22 32 Kg7 7. Rh5
*
While I was copying and pasting the above, Crafty has bumped black up to -1.97. I think the idea is that after the exchange, black is down 2 pawns but up 1 piece, which should should be enough to give black a slight to significant advantage with the queens off. Black has better prospects from 1..Kg7 than what was played in the actual game in any case. |
