Feb-18-19  Mountain1: I think this is referring to the song by 90s band Hanson?

Feb-18-19  OrangeTulip: Pun exceeds level of the game
Feb-18-19  sfm: 17.-,a4!!, the inspired move that effectively wins the game, allowing black to exploit White's disrupted Q-side with brilliant tactics. Probably White should have played 17.b3 instead.
Feb-18-19  goodevans: Some nice ideas from both players. In the end white underestimated the power of the passed pawn (easy to say in hindsight).

<28.Qa5> would have maintained white's many threats at the same time ensuring the a-pawn was doomed. Black's rook cannot leave the back rank because Qa8+ would inflict massive damage.

Good game.

Feb-18-19  morfishine: There's only one thing going for this sad, ineffective play-on-word (since its obviously not a pun): Bopp is pronounced Bopp

till you drop.
Feb-18-19  MrMelad: Good pun and good game. 30..Qxf2 is very good
Feb-18-19  MrMelad: I'd play 28.Nxc8 however and finish it easy
Feb-18-19  goodevans: <MrMelad: I'd play 28.Nxc8 however and finish it easy>

As long as black has the a-pawn then he has chances. 28.Nxc8 is fine as long as you attend to the a-pawn straight after. <28.Nxc8 Qxc8 29.Qa5> (similar to my previous post) is the most effective way to do that. This time it's black's Q that can't leave the back rank to come to the pawn's rescue as white's threats there are just too strong.

OhioChessFan: I would have gone with <Melad's> transposition of moves too.
Feb-18-19  MrMelad: Yes, <goodevans>, 29. Qa5 is a very good continuation but harder to see. After 28. Nxc8 Qxc8 I'd go first for simplification with 29. Be4 and if black plays 29..Qc1+ then 30. Qxc1 Nxc1 31. Bxf5 and black can't immediately advance the a pawn due to back rank mate.

OhioChessFan: Sitting in the local Hothead Burritos and MMMBop just came on their radio system.
Feb-18-19  goodevans: <MrMelad> I've become more cautious over time and neutralising my opponent's main threat would take priority over simplification. To me, Qa5 is obvious (why I'd even choose it a move earlier) but unless you're a fully rounded GM what's obvious and what's not is largely a matter of individual style.

HeMateMe: you found a coffee shop with MBob on the play list? Were the kiddies vaping strawberry flavored tobacco?
Feb-19-19  thegoodanarchist: Well crap.

I requested computer analysis to see what happens after 18.Nxf4, and the dang engine didn't even look at it!

What a rip off.

Guess I have to fire up Deep Shredder 12, my ancient engine.
