Jul-30-12  watwinc: <Marmot PFL> f5 aims at freeing d5 for a Black knight
Jul-30-12  Marmot PFL: Removing e4 makes eventual Kd5 possible, but also weakens f5
Jul-30-12  frogbert: it's about the d5 square, marmotpfl.
Jul-30-12  frogbert: it also makes the white kingside pawns more static and vulnerable.
Jul-30-12  Ghuzultyy: Carlsen's endgame technique is just too good to match in these positions.
Jul-30-12  Marmot PFL: Well black can play Nf6-d5 now, as white played Na3 and took pressure off Nb6. Maybe a king move was better, or h3 and g4.

OBIT: Hao does have an airtight wall - the White king can't get through. If Carlsen can win this, it will be up to the knights.
Jul-30-12  Ulhumbrus: <Wyatt Gwyon> I will take it as a compliment.
Jul-30-12  haydn20: I would not want to be White's hP just now.
Jul-30-12  Sokrates: This is a position Carlsen enjoys to play - and he has plenty of time. An idea is Ke6-d5 dominating the center.
Jul-30-12  Eyal: <a- and h-pawns and knights... carlsen has an eye for endgame tactics. :o)>

Yeah, it's something that's good to remember: knights on b2 or g2 can't stop a- or h-pawns, respectively, once they've reached the 3rd rank...

Jul-30-12  talisman: <Ulhumbrus> pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
Jul-30-12  Ulhumbrus: <Sokrates: This is a position Carlsen enjoys to play - and he has plenty of time. An idea is Ke6-d5 dominating the center. > If Wang Hao had chosen 50 e5, the e5 and b5 pawns would have controlled the wall of squares c6 and d6 and together with the e6 pawn would have kept Black's king out

OBIT: Hao just needs to sit on this position. Carlsen needs to find a way to break the blockade, if indeed the blockade can be broken.
Jul-30-12  talisman: ♔ goes for a4 pawn?
Jul-30-12  Sokrates: <Ulhumbrus> As always - a pleasure to read your reasonings. Thanks.

tamar: Hao is nearer to a draw now after 54...Ne4 He can chase the a pawn with 55 Kc2 not fearing 55...Nd6 56 b6 turning the tables on overstressed knights.
Jul-30-12  Marmot PFL: <Carlsen's endgame technique is just too good to match in these positions.>

Carlsen's chess intuition makes him the best middlegame player but I still think he plays too fast in the endings.

Jul-30-12  watwinc: White's K-side looks vulnerable - oh, 54 ... Ne4 Wrong again, I was expecting Ng4 first to force 55 h4, and then 55 Nf6, threatening Ne4 (if g4 in response, Nf2ch forks K and g pawn) Carlsen's obviously seen something stronger
Jul-30-12  hierophante: If White stands pat, ...g5-g4, ...h5-h4xg3 is on.

Perhaps that is a hasty assessment on my part, as after 56...Kd7 Black has chances still.

Jul-30-12  SCUBA diver: If Black exchanges the Knights, the game is over with a win for Black.
Jul-30-12  haydn20: 55. Ne5 can't be good because it releases the Bl K to approach the bP via d8 etc.
Jul-30-12  Kinghunt: Engines claim Kd6! wins by force here.

tamar: Agree, <Marmot PFL> Wouldn't mind if Magnus thought 20 minutes here, particularly as engines are screaming that there is one superior move that is not obvious.
