May-22-21  Brenin: The pun is beyond me, and the game resembles a typical D-team game at my club. Black needed 38 ... Rxe3 39 Qxe3 Qd1+ 40 Kh2 Qd6+ and 41... Qxf6 to stay alive (but only just). Maybe the clock was to blame for Black's dreadful 38th move.

MissScarlett: You mean, you've never heard the expression <wonder back up the middle>?....ok, me neither....

I'm calling for a moratorium on puns by <OCF> and <FSR>.

OhioChessFan: You'd think the Brits would just accept their limited world view...
May-22-21  Brenin: <OCF>, I think you're batting on a sticky wicket there.
May-22-21  Messiah: Very low quality, horrible pun. Well done!
May-22-21  faulty: The first time when I fully agree with Messiah. Sad... There should be some minimum standard for the quality of the games as well

master8ch: 38.Qh6 would have been a nice way to end it.
May-22-21  Cheapo by the Dozen: I liked it.

1. The game was fun.

2. It's a baseball pun. That should have been noted for the non-Americans here, but it's certainly a legitimate area of punning.

3. As Google can quickly confirm, "grounder back up the middle" is indeed a fairly common baseball phrase.

4. To clarify for the baseball-challenged:

-- When a baseball is struck with a bat, especially into "fair" rather than "foul" territory, and the ball promptly hits the ground, it's known as a "ground ball" or "grounder".

-- (The alternative is that it does not soon hit the ground, in which case it is a "fly ball" or "fly". "Line drives" and "pop flies" are special cases of fly balls, the former being nearly parallel to the ground and the latter being nearly perpendicular.)

-- "Back up the middle" is a modifier indicating that the grounder went approximately along a line that bisects the playing field, i.e. in the direction of the pitching mound and of second base.

  OhioChessFan: <Brenin>, excellent.
May-22-21  ajile: <Messiah: Very low quality, horrible pun. Well done!>

I saw what you did there.

And I APPROVE!

May-22-21  Brenin: Thanks, <Cheapo>, for enlightenment concerning the pun. I see that since crossing the Atlantic baseball, like most sports, has developed its own esoteric terminology. Cricket's terminology can be even more puzzling, with its "silly mid on" and "square leg" (positions on the field), "googlies" and "chinamen" (spinning deliveries of the ball).
