Mar-20-13  Marmot PFL: Previous game from 2011 was drawn- Ivanchuk vs Carlsen, 2011
Mar-20-13  Robin01: Long think by Carlsen here.
Mar-20-13  boz: <Ulhumbrus: One famous example of this variation of the Gruenfeld defence was the game Petrosian vs Fischer, 1971>

Thanks.

tamar: Ivanchuk had previously only played 6 Rc1 (in three games which he won) so Magnus is probably out of prep.
Mar-20-13  haydn20: Opening Ex has six continuations, the least promising of which is 8...dxc5. Ne4 and Be6 both look fine to me--I barely know this opening.
Mar-20-13  rankov: Too 8... Td8 interesting
Mar-20-13  whiteshark: 1.d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. Bf4 Bg7 5. Nf3 O-O 6. e3 c5 7. dxc5 Qa5 8. Rc1

games left Opening Explorer with 8... dxc4 as most likely

Mar-20-13  DcGentle: 8... Nbd7 could be the style of Carlsen.

ketchuplover: But will Carlsen play as simply as Fischer did?
Mar-20-13  Kinghunt: 9. Qa4 looks like a possible for Ivanchuk. His choice of moves will be an interesting window into his current mindset. Does he offer an exchange of queens, or does he play more aggressively and try to keep possibilities alive?
Mar-20-13  Ulhumbrus: Up to the move 8 Rc1 the players have repeated the moves of the fanous game Petrosian vs Fischer, 1971 After 8 Rc1 it may seem that Black can win a pawn on c3 by the move ...Ne4. However on 8...Ne4 9 cxd5 Nxc3 White can play - as Petrosian played- the zwischenzug ( or intermezzo or in-between move) 10 Qd2! sacrificing his a pawn in place of the c3 pawn: 10...Qxa2 11 bxc3 and Black's queen is displaced.
Mar-20-13  whiteshark: Did Trent just said "It's dull o clock in the Kramnik game"?
Mar-20-13  chessdgc2: What?? 3...Nbd7 Carlsen's style??? That is far too passive1
Mar-20-13  Eyal: <Ulhumbrus: Up to the move 8 Rc1 the players have repeated the moves of the fanous game Petrosian vs Fischer, 1971>

They didn't, actually - in that game Rc1 was played on move 7, without Nf3 (and 0-0 by Black).

Mar-20-13  Strongest Force: Fischer always played the "G" on big occasions
Mar-20-13  Travis Bickle: That new Magnus Carlsen pic has him looking like a cross between Billy The Kid & Alfred E. Newman. ; P
Mar-20-13  haydn20: Carlsen spent about 12 min. to settle on 8...Rd8--guessing he wasn't prepped in this line. It looks very solid.
Mar-20-13  DcGentle: Well, 8... Rd8 hasn't been played that often either.
Mar-20-13  haydn20: <Travis Bickle: That new Magnus Carlsen pic has him looking like a cross between Billy The Kid & Alfred E. Newman. ; P> LOL. Perfect.
Mar-20-13  Pedro Fernandez: <Eyal: <Ulhumbrus: Up to the move 8 Rc1 the players have repeated the moves of the fanous game Petrosian vs Fischer, 1971> They didn't, actually - in that game Rc1 was played on move 7, without Nf3 (and 0-0 by Black). > You're a library <Eyal>, what a memory! Or maybe you own an extraordinary chessbase.
Mar-20-13  Ulhumbrus: 9 Qb3 defends the pawn on c4 as well as N on c3 and the a pawn while keeping the d5 pawn attacked. Ivanchuk can assume that Carlsen has prepared this move. However no amount of preparation can cover everything, and if a player has played soundly he need not lack confidence in his ability to find an adequate reply to anything the opponent comes up with. Therefore if Ivanchuk can satisfy himself that he has played soundly, he need not do too much more.
Mar-20-13  Strongest Force: Its personal but I already don't like white
Mar-20-13  Travis Bickle: http://www.leconcombre.com/concpost...

Mar-20-13  DcGentle: 8... Rd8 was Houdini's choice.
Mar-20-13  chessdgc2: Yes, it's very likely Carlsen hasn't seen this line, but what's new whenyou're playing Ivanchuk? The line is razor sharp, especially for White and it might challenge Chukky's clock management yet again
