An Englishman: Good Evening: Why yours truly never had a chance of becoming an IM let alone a GM--almost could never sustain an initiative for this many moves.

Wondering about 11...Nc6. If instead 11...Bxd5; 12.cxd5,Bd6!? (d6 or Be7!?), Black can capture any minor piece that steps onto f4. 13.e4,0-0; 14.f4,f6; 15.Re1,Re8 might prove a problem, though. If 11...Bxd5; 12.Qxd5,Qc6; 13.Qxc6!?,Nxc6!?; 14.cxb5,Nd4 looks adequate for Black.

Oct-01-22  boz: Too sharp for me. Like two gladiators fighting on a tightrope.

Teyss: <Check It Out> No immediate win but Black is 3 Ps down and his K will soon be cold because of all the draughts. SF rates the final position at +9.5 (35 ply).

<FSR> Indeed, I thought repeated puns were not accepted. Apart from safety pin naturally which is a category in itself. Your game is more interesting BTW.

Shame Onischuk missed 37.f3+ though. Would have made for a much more satisfying finish.

  FSR: <Teyss: . . .<FSR> Indeed, I thought repeated puns were not accepted.>

The software won't let one user submit the same pun for two different games, but it doesn't stop you from submitting a pun that's been used before. (I just checked this by submitting <Bad to the Bone> for yet a third game. I then deleted it.) There are quite a few puns that have been used two or more times, as you can see by perusing Game Collection: Game of the Day Pun Index (Sittin' - Topalov), for example. Sometimes the same pun <for the same game> has been used more than once (and not just the infamous <A Pin, But Not a Safety Pin>). Kramnik vs Shirov, 1994 has been GOTD with the same pun thrice.

FSR: <Check It Out> Most likely Black flagged while pondering how to respond to the "quiet move" (not a check) 39.Rd7.
Oct-02-22  morphynoman2: 2. c4? (Stockfish). Isn't a joke?

perfidious: Hard to believe Iturrizaga went in for a line which has been known to be bad for Black for decades, despite a world champion booking a win in Alekhine vs Capablanca, 1927.

To be precise, the software blocks you from suggesting a pun that is already in the suggested pun pool (whether suggested by yourself or any other kibitzer). After a pun gets used, it's removed from the suggested pun pool, which is why you are allowed to suggest one that has been used in the past.

FSR: In Carlsen vs Niemann, 2022, the game begins 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6, and the world champion (White) loses in 57 moves.

Two weeks later, they meet again. This time Niemann has White. The game begins 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4, and Carlsen resigns! Niemann vs Carlsen, 2022

Annotating the present game, Stockfish 11 tells us that 2.c4? is a mistake, and that after 2...e6 Black is better (-0.26)! But White recovers, and even wins the game. I'm so confused.

FSR: <beatgiant> Do you mean that the software blocks you from suggesting a pun that anyone else has suggested for <any> game? Or just a pun that someone else has suggested for the game for which you are making the nomination? I believe it's the latter.

Come again?

On the other hand, this is clear and convincing evidence that Neimann cheated. Guess it means I did so dozens of times as well in the 1980s and 1990s.

FSR: <perfidious> It shames me to admit that I too have played the execrable 2.c4? many times. No wonder I never got any good.

perfidious: <FSR>, really, we should both have known we would never amount to anything; after all, cheaters <never> win. On the other hand, I now understand why I was foredoomed in all three encounters with Benjamin, as well as why I bought the farm vs Browne last time we met, though dropping that blitz game on time in a much better, if not winning position.

I just tested, and it blocks a pun that anyone else has suggested for <any> game.

FSR: <beatgiant> You're right. That is a strange and to my mind unfortunate feature, since the pun might be better suited to the second game than it was to the first.
