Apr-01-18  sfm: I saw 21.Bg5 in seconds. But OK, having been through this game 3 or 4 times earlier made have made it easier to spot.
Apr-01-18  Walter Glattke: My idea was playing for mate with 21.b3 f5 22,Qg6 Qg6 23.hxg6 fxe5 24.Rxe4 d5 25.Re7 c5!? 26.Bxh6! or anything similar attack.
Apr-01-18  JimmyRockHound: So is AlphaZero really light years ahead of anything else? Or was it not a fair fight?
Apr-01-18  sorrowstealer: Whatever it will get enough publicity;)
Apr-01-18  daveinsatiable: @JimmyRockHound:
Both. A0 ist light years ahead of anything, but not at chess. It wasn't a fair fight as the game parameters weren't favourable to SF, but in fairness it wasn't meant to be, it was just a research project to see if A0's learning algorithms were generalisable.
Apr-01-18  agb2002: Too famous.
Apr-01-18  yadasampati: It is good to know that A0 is almost just as limited as human beings in chess. It is just a matter of perspective: for an ant, a mouse is pretty big, but compared to a dinosaur, a mouse is almost nothing, just like the ant :-)
Apr-01-18  ChessHigherCat: What's kind of funny is that instead of calling it AlphaOmega, which would be the whole gamut from the smallest unit to the biggest, it's called AlphaZero, from the first unit to null, in microcomputing style.
Apr-01-18  patzer2: On Easter Sunday when Christian's celebrate how much God loved us by giving us his only Son to die for our sins on the cross, perhaps it's fitting we see a puzzle to remind us how little we humans know in comparison to God's infinite knowledge and wisdom.

Perhaps Alpha Zero is giving us a little insight into what it might be like if God played a game of chess against it or a human Chess champion.

P.S.: For mortal patzers like myself, I found the variation 21. Bg5 hxg5 22. Nxg5 Qh6?? 23. Nxf7+! +- (forces mate-in-seven) instructive and amusing.

Apr-01-18  pth: This game reminds me of a remark by Noam Chomsky about computer chess. In a reaction to the game between Kasparov and Deep Blue, he said that machines are also much better at weight-lifting than humans, but they use such a different technique that there is no point in comparing them. This explains also why we still play chess.
Apr-01-18  morfishine: Incredible, one need only find <21.Bg5>!!! and the remaining 82 moves will flow smoothly, like a pleasant mountain stream
Apr-01-18  R. P. Musante: I think that Chess is a game for humans with blunders, errors and opinions, although it could be a field of experimentation for other disciplines. It is not a science, fortunately, and please don't spoil the joy of this fine entertainment.
Apr-01-18  schachfuchs: Hm, took me a bit longer today to fully calculate the win in 96 moves ;-)

Happy Easter and much fun with the (human) Grenke games!

Apr-01-18  razetime: Win in 96 moves, is a bit hard to calculate, even for a Sunday puzzle, dont'cha think?
Apr-01-18  Pchief: What's wrong with 11...d5 ?
Apr-01-18  Pasker: Insane puzzle to achieve a +.60 advantage wow! Even to understand the point of this move you will have to see 20 moves deeper at least.
Apr-01-18  leRevenant: AZ making a mouthful of Stockfish would also have been appropriate for Friday.
Apr-01-18  ndg2: I tried to analyze this game with Stockfish, but to no avail.
Apr-01-18  scholes: Every year on fools day chess games used to give a puzzle where there is no winning move.

This year they tried something different.

Easiest sunday puzzle ever.

Apr-01-18  scholes: Lol sf does not find this move after 15 hours of analysis.

Chess.com did a very good video on the games. There were lots of fascinating variations after 21 Bg5.

Apr-01-18  thegoodanarchist: Well, I would play 21...hxg5 myself. Can't find anything wrong with it.
Apr-01-18  whiteshark: What's <beyond insane>?
Apr-01-18  morfishine: AlphaZero goes online April 1, 2018. Human decisions are removed from strategic planning. Alphazero begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. April 2, 2018

*****

Apr-01-18  WorstPlayerEver: Oh well... it seems nobody shares my obsession to beat the engines.
Apr-01-18  awfulhangover: Don't complain. It's April 1.
