 | | keypusher: It's sad to think that this game will never get as much kibitzing as Janosevic vs Geller, 1968. |
|
Jan-22-22
 | | tamar: Dubov found a way to play this creatively. |
|
Jan-22-22
 | | Clement Fraud: Am I to understand that Mr. Dubov never showed up (??????) |
|
Jan-22-22
 | | Stonehenge: Yes, I have updated the PGN with an explanation. |
|

 | | tamar: Additional Caption for this game:
Who Was That Unmasked Man? |
|
Jan-22-22 | | Ulhumbrus: We have not been told the reason why Dubov considers it a matter of principle to not wear a mask. Is it because a requirement to wear a mask breaches some prior agreement or is it because the requirement favours Giri or is it because of some other reason? |

Jan-22-22 | | Knightmare07: So... is 1.d4 an uncommon opening? |
|
Jan-22-22
 | | moronovich: <Jan-22-22 Knightmare07: So... is 1.d4 an uncommon opening?> To Fischer it was. |
|
Jan-22-22
 | | Teyss: <keypusher> LOL. Maybe in 54 years it will. <Knightmare07> 1.d4 isn't, Black's answer is. The final position makes a good Sunday puzzle. I don't want to cast a stone at Dubov because I don't know about TS regulations. Do they say a covid contact must wear a mask or undergo a quick test, which he did, or... nothing? In the former case Dubov should have complied even though at high level it must hinder concentration. In the two latter he was probably right to make it a matter of principle especially considering (a) the tournament's cock-up last year re. Firouzja vs Wojtaszek, 2021 (they apologised afterwards) and (b) the fact chess is not a contact sport. |

Jan-22-22 | | OrangeTulip: Could a be that Putin is behind this?
After all he is trying to frustrate European countries and companies wherever and whenever possible. |
|
Jan-23-22 | | sicilianchameleon: Well, Daniil, your principles pretty much suck. Now I hope you never become world champion. Thanks for the heads up |

Jan-23-22
 | | perfidious: My most common opening from my days as a 1600 player through the remainder of my playing career was 1.d4, but I must admit it inspired no-one to give up the ghost on the spot; even the veriest tyro played a few moves before quailing at that awesome manifestation of power. |
|
Jan-23-22 | | Retireborn: Given that he wasn't expecting Dubov to play, Giri missed an opportunity to play 1.Na3 or something equally amusing. |
|
Jan-23-22
 | | perfidious: <Retireborn>, on reviewing Opening Explorer, it astonished me to learn that, inter alia, 1.Na3 has actually made an even score, albeit in limited action. There are some debuts which, while being tried far more frequently, have fared surprisingly badly. |

 | | MissScarlett: <Unplayed Games 5.1 Whether these occur because of forfeiture or any other reason, they are not counted. Except in case of force majeure, any game where both players have made at least one move will be rated, unless the regulations relating to Fair Play require otherwise.> https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/B... |

 | | MissScarlett: <Daniil Dubov Wins Against "Hikaru Nakamura" with ONLY 1 Move in World Blitz Championship 2021> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUn...
I thought in that game that Dubov made a move, as well, but apparently not, or it wasn't officially recorded. |
|
Jan-23-22
 | | Stonehenge: So, since Giri made one move (https://chess24.com/en/read/news/ta...) and Dubov didn't, it will be counted but not rated? |
|
Jan-23-22
 | | MissScarlett: <cg.com> and FIDE should form a joint commission to study that matter and others. |
|
Jan-23-22
 | | MissScarlett: Well, the <Dubov - Nakamura> game was counted, of course, but if the clock wasn't started and no move was made, it can't be recorded. Although that small technicality has never stopped <cg.com> before. |

Jan-23-22
 | | Sally Simpson: Robert Moens (Tata Steel Communications & Public Affairs) commented to Chess.com: "... the players' contract does include a clause that the organizers can take the necessary measures in case unexpected situations regarding Covid arise. Because the tournament doctor deemed it unwise for Dubov to play without a face mask, we as organizers made this request to Dubov, who fully understood our decision but decided not to play the game out of principle." Apparently Dubov is playing his round 8 game unmasked after testing negative. |

 | | FSR: The strongest first move since 1.c4!! 1-0 in Fischer vs Panno, 1970. |
|
Jan-23-22
 | | FSR: <perfidious> When I look at Opening Explorer, it shows that 1.Na3!! is White's best-scoring move, followed by 1.Nh3! Here are White's games with 1.Na3: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che.... 20 wins, 8 losses, 2 draws. |
|
Jan-23-22 | | Z truth 000000001: <Millbase> has <1.h4> as top-scoring for White, with 65.9% (30 games - 1991 average year - 2302/2483 AveElo/Perf) |

Jan-23-22
 | | Teyss: <Sally Simpson> Thanks for the update. So it appears Dubov didn't have a case, anyhow he didn't make a fuss about it, simply withdrew. In the end he only penalised himself, and us just mildly for missing a game. I respect people who take responsibility without dispute even if I don't agree. Regardless of the specific issue, "necessary measures" is a very unprecise and exorbitant wording. Could that mean forbidding a participant to play or even banning him? Tournaments need to come up with more precise protocols to ensure continuity and safety. Or maybe it's just a matter of communication because the official website only says: <"All possible precautions and measures are taken to ensure a COVID-19 safe event for players, community and staff. All measures will be (and remain) in line with the then ruling guidelines from national and local health & safety authorities."> That's all folks. |
|
Jan-24-22 | | Fanques Fair: Congratulations do Dubov ! Face masks does not protect anyone from any virus, as have show various tests. |
