  offramp: This game brought to an end Steinitz's 25-game winning streak. It's a pity he missed 23...Bd4+.
Apr-17-05  Milo: Maybe there's a defense I'm not seeing, but your move does seem very good for black. 23...Bd3+ 24.Be3 Bxe3+ 25.Rxe3 Qxe3+ 26.Kh1 Qh6, and I don't know what white does.
Apr-17-05  Milo: In my line, try 25.Kh1
Apr-17-05  RookFile: I never knew that Steinitz had won
25 in a row.

  offramp: 32...Qd5 looks like a mighty move as well.
Dec-29-05  Whitehat1963: Perpetual check, just in the nick of time!
Feb-26-08  Knight13: White's attack shouldn't have been successful.
Mar-29-12  AVRO38: <This game brought to an end Steinitz's 25-game winning streak.>

It's also his first game against an American during that streak...nuff said!

Mar-29-12  pericles of athens: <offramp> 23...Bd4+ does indeed look nasty. nice find!
May-28-14  dernier thylacine: Let's not forget Steinitz did not play competition games since 1876: lack of training.

However 34.Be4!! is an ingenious and nice solution found by Mackenzie!

Apr-10-16  zanzibar: @fix (?) - too many moves.

Lehner gives this as a draw after 35.Bf6+,

<OL v2 N19 (Jul 1882) G-96 p216/432>

Seems the right place for a draw to me too.

Trouble is, everbody (CB/NIC/365/CG) thinks the extra move belongs here.
