An Englishman: Good Evening: Terrible pun, but in a good way. Terribly good?

Even though this might look similar to Fischer's famous win v. Miagmasuren, Black actually played much better defense and for a while had a large advantage. The CG computer seems to think that 28...Bxc1 started the downhill slide. The three pieces v. R and 3 pawns was a crazy end to the brawl.

beatgiant: In memory of Tony Bennett (1926-2023)

The Café de la Régence is no longer a Café,
The hot chess scene in Minsk is of another day.
I've been a tail-ender and downtrodden in Hoogoven...
I'm going to play in my city by the bay.

I played Harut in San Francisco,
Threw all I had into an attack.
When pawns on the king's flank
climb halfway to the back rank,
And the other player's near the queening square, I don't care.

My win waits there in San Francisco,
Upon the black and white chessboard.
When I played chess in you, San Francisco
By your golden gate I scored.

When I played through this I couldn't see why that would be bad so I checked and now the CG SF says <28...Bxc1> is good (-5.90 @25 ply). That wouldn't be the first time that SF changed its mind about something.

In such a complicated game between a couple of juniors you'd expect there to be quite a few errors and SF reckons there were. Here's what it's currently saying (at least, to me):

Black could have maintained a fairly health lead with <32...Qb7> (-2.90 @34 ply).

<32...Rb7> was a blunder and White should have capitalised with <33.Ng4> with the idea of sac'ing on h6. The R alone on Black's 2nd rank is not enough to defend everything (compare this with 32...Qb7 33.Ng4 Qf7 where Black is still winning).

After <33.Qg6> Black should have played <33...Ne7> which SF gives as equal (=0.00 @40 ply) although it's still mighty complicated.

After <33...Re7 34.Ng4> White was winning all the way to the end.

An interesting and enjoyable game to play through.

piltdown man: Yes, an awful(ly good) pun, and a great game.
Aug-10-23  Gouvaneur: I disagree, it's quite the horrible game and a bad pun.

PeterLalic: The dumbest puns are often the funniest. Albeit inaccurate, the game is very illustrative. It features many motifs of the King's Indian Attack.

15.d4 closes the centre.
15...c3 opens the queenside.
22.Nf4 sacrifices the c2 pawn.
24.Nxe6 undermines the d5 pawn.
25...Ndxe5 counter-attacks the centre.
27...Bxa3 creates a passed pawn.
34.Ng4 attacks the h6 pawn.
37...a2 threatens promotion.
38.Bxd5 activates the bishop.
40.Bxh6 opens the kingside.

tamar: Not often it's the other guy they pun when Vinay (Boom) Bhat is available.
Aug-11-23  drpoundsign: RIP Tony Bennett.
Why does it say "Formation" instead of "Opening" or Defense??"
