Jan-12-12  sevenseaman: Black is a P better, but he may soon be at pawnbrokers.

Clearly <f7> looks to be the hub of operations. There are two ways to exploit it; capture or use it as a pin. It is tough to decide as the first involves a piece sac and the latter perhaps nets a piece...hmm, a dilemma.

The only factor that helps is that the N does not seem to do much more than get me a piece (long term) and very little towards the objective of winning the game quickly, always a feature in a POTD.

Another advantage the N emits loud and clear is that from e5 it can jump to c4 to harass Black's poorly placed Q.

The Black Q can only go to c7...wait; not even c7 as the DSB's line of sight will be cleared all the way when the N gets up from e5. Yahoo...I cannot now wait for my B to vacate c4 for my N. Ho ho ho ... pay dirt!

<20. Bxf7+ Rxf7 21. Nc4 ~ 22. Nxa5> 1-0.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh! Its a long story! Was taking the piece better? Its o.k., thank God.
I only came to do the POTD, never bargained for this full house.
Jan-12-12  LoveThatJoker: <TheoNov> I'll take you one further:
Let's say that after 31...Bd5 32. Qc8 Bb7 33. Qe6 Bd5 34. Qg6 and White is better.
Jan-12-12  TheBish: Botvinnik vs G Stepanov, 1930
White to play (19.?) "Medium"
This is one that would be easier to solve if White had one fewer piece! (As long as the missing piece is the light-squared bishop on c4.) I suppose that is true of most tactics of this type, namely that of vacating a square (usually by sacrificing the piece which is occupying the square desired for another piece), combined in this case with trapping the queen.
19. Bxf7+! Rxf7
Hoping for 20. Nxf7 Kxf7. After 19...Kh7 (or Kh8) the reply would be the same.
20. Nc4 f4
There is nothing better, as the queen is trapped. At least Black gets another piece out of the deal. Of course, Black dreams of 21. Bxf4? Qh5, escaping the trap.
21. Nxa5 fxg3
Black can safely resign now, down a queen for two pieces -- especially when playing Botvinnik!
~~~~~~~
Wow, I was surprised Black played this out. That's either stubbornness, or Black was playing on out of anger, or wanting to avoid seeing his name on the wrong end of a miniature!

  HeMateMe: I got the first move, but missed the queen trap.
Jan-12-12  LoveThatJoker: PS. Not to be overbearing here, but even though I'm convinced that 32. Qc8 is a solid positional move in the the line in question, I'm much more leaning towards my new favourite 32. Qg6 straight-away!

Jan-12-12  LoveThatJoker: PPS. Also note that if 29. Qxc6 Bb7 30. Qe6 Ne7 31. f6 gxf6 (best) 32. Rxf6 Bd5 33. Qg4+ Rg7 34. Qe2 Rxg2 35. Qxg2 Bxg2+ 36. Kxg2

Much better trading of the Q for R+Minor Piece than what happened in the game.

Position after 36. Kxg2

Jan-12-12  Once: I dreamt I was flying. Not 747 jumbo jet sort of flying, but human torch-stylee gravity-defying, arms outstretched sort of flying. Why do superheroes always need to put their arms forward to fly? It's not as if your standard forearm has any aerodynamic properties. And if you are trying to suspend disbelief to the extent that a human being can fly without the aid of a plane, why not susped disbelief to allow him to do so with his hands in his pockets? Would superman fall out of the sky if he needed to attend to an itch in his gentleman's area?

Well, it was a boring business meeting. Someone was droning on and on about a point we had agreed half an hour ago. The guy next to me was doodling something that sort of looked like Angelina Jolie in profile. Someone across the table was quietly reading the papers for the next meeting and hoping no-one was noticing. Meanwhile Mr droney voice as still plodding on ... "and thirteenthly..."

But out of the window I could just see a patch of blue sky. Not much, just a gap in the perpetual grey clouds. A shaft of sunlight was doing its "finger of God" thing and all it needed was the voice of Morgan Freeman or Charlton Heston ... or me in Superman mode with my underpants on over my tights. Which is a another dream, but we'd better not go there.

"And what do you think, Iain?" asked our chairman with a wicked grin on his face.

"Me? Oh, er, um, I agree with Fred..."

In this game, Bottvinik dreams of Nc4 to trap the black queen. But just like those pesky laws of physics and gravity and stuff, his own Bc4 is in the way.

Then he dreams about making two moves at the same time. What fun you could have if you could stop time for everyone else and only you could still move! No? Only me then.

He dreams of whisking the Bc4 out of the way, flying it off the board into a patch of blue. But at the same time the black pieces don't move. Well, none of the ones that matter.

Sometimes dreams can come true. 19. Bxf7+ means that black has to respond to the check. He has no time to move his queen. Then 20. Nc4 and somehow you could believe that a man can fly. Well, a white knight anyways.

Jan-12-12  morfishine: While Chess is often complicated, its the simple solutions that cause me to chuckle: Here, after <19.Bxf7+ Rxf7 20.Nc4> the Black Queen is lost

I had quite a chuckle after finally finding this one

<LoveThatJoker> Good point about Black having to capture White's WSB

Jan-12-12  Gilmoy: I was impressed enough by the pattern of N-trapping-Q on the d8-a5 diagonal that already I kibitzed it once, with a diagram: Navara vs T Nyback, 1997. So it just leaped out at me.

Discovering the hidden-control on c7 was a nice touch. But I "knew" that the pattern needs a 2nd minor piece('s influence), so I was already looking for that.

We loves patterns!

Jan-12-12  mohannagappan: Today i missed to find a correct key move in this week
Jan-12-12  LoveThatJoker: <Gilmoy> Nice analysis on the Navara game. Very instructive.

Navara vs T Nyback, 1997

Thank you.

Jan-12-12  polarx: I think it is a brilliant puzzle but very very hard. At least for me. After racking my brain on the same moves over and over I check for the solution and it is the "simple" Nc4. Mine was a chucle mixed with a "d'oh!".
Jan-12-12  Edoneill: The puzzle yesterday was a trapped queen puzzle too and this was my 1st instinct here too.

Got looking more though and got a little obsessed with the weakness on f7, completely forgot about the possibility to trap the queen and didn't solve the puzzle.

Always go with your gut instinct, it's probably right!

Jan-12-12  gofer: Okay, today we have the choice of another queen trap or not. This one is clearly available and looks to net the queen for a less material than yesterday, but perhaps there is a sting in the tail?

<19 Bxf7+ Rxf7>
<20 Nc4 ...>

Okay, the queen is lost, but black has lots of activity. Can this be translated into anything!?

Time to check...

<Black can safely resign now, down a queen for two pieces -- especially when playing Botvinnik!> I beg to differ. Botvinnik in 1930 was only at the start of his chess career, but that's not the real point: there is still play for Black in this variation. Here's a link to Crafty End Game Trainer (the puzzle position) to explore the possibilities: http://www.chessvideos.tv/endgame-t.... Winning is not trivial, especially without computer assistance.

Jan-12-12  Patriot: 19.Bxf7+ Rxf7 20.Nc4 took me less than a minute to see since I noticed how immobile the queen was right away. I didn't see anything in terms of counter-play and thought black might play 20...b6 to minimize material damage, getting at least two pieces for the queen. An easy Thursday!
Jan-12-12  LoveThatJoker: <TheoNov> Going back to the line we both analyzed, I'm seeing now that after 29. Qxc6 Bb7 30. Qe6 Ne3 31. Rf2 Bd5 maybe White's best is indeed 32. Qxa6 Bc5? 33. Qxa5!

In fact after 32. Qxa6 it's hard to come up with an ultra-strong counter-play move for Black. 32...Ng4 is a try, but after 33. Rd2! Black should resign, bro.

Position after 33. Rd2!

click for larger view

Another try for Black is 32...Bc4 33. Qxa5 Ng4 34. Bd4 (Maybe 34. Bg3 is stronger) 34...Nxf2+ (34...Bd6 35. g3 ) 35. Bxf2 when once again, Black should resign.

Position after 35. Bxf2

PS. Wow, that's a lot of posts on my part for analysis after 29. Qxc6, but as Anand says in this recent and candid interview,

"Some positions do have that magic: you think that everything’s now clear, but suddenly someone suggests a new move and you realise there’s yet another layer of depth, and beyond that – another…

And it becomes clear that the position is much more complex than you thought; and you can’t get it out of your head.

You return to your room and even with the computer you by no means immediately get to the bottom of it. <LTJ: I'm currently not using engines for analysis> It’s a very good thing when a chess player can maintain that curiosity."

Jan-12-12  Nemesistic: This just seems so simple once you've seen the solution.

Within two moves this game is a formality,yet i dtill didn't get it,i looked for 5 minutes and still missed it! I was looking at a combo starting with 19.Ng6 for too long.. I thought it was hard!

Jan-12-12  CHESSTTCAMPS: In this early middle-game position, it appears that white has sacrificed a pawn on f5 for active play. This achieves two positive benefits for white, opening the f-file and extending the scope of the DSB. Very soon, I was looking at tactics directed at f7, but neither 19.Nxf7 nor 19.Ng6 do very much. Then I noticed the little problem with black's queen.

19.Bxf7+!

As on Chess Tactics Server, when in doubt, look for a queen trap!

19... Rxf7 20.Nf4! and now we see the main point of an earlier f5 - the natural queen retreat to c7 is not available. Black might as well resign, because 20... b6 21.Nxa5 bxa5 leaves him down a queen for two minor pieces without any counterplay.

Jan-12-12  karnak64: My goodness -- Stepanov has some panache hanging in there against Botvinnik down a Queen for two pieces. And Botvinnik has some vision in dumping the queen for an exchange-up endgame.
